CRU ID N - Is that a no go?

#1 Post by MTH » Wed Aug 02, 2006 5:59 am

I'm looking to buy a X31 with a slightly damaged Keyboard bezel assembly (FRU 13N5337). It has two cracks, one above the PCMCIA slot and the other on the front of the palm rest.

Of course it indicates some sort abuse but according to the seller it's fully functional. The Keyboard bezel assembly is only about 22 USD on the Swedish Lenovo site.

Any suggestions about fixing the palm rest is welcome, leave it or give it try?

Regards,

Mats

Cracking on these places indicates strong force being applied downwards. If the laptop was in a folded position when this happened, there is a good chance of the lcd being damaged.

Usually, with the exception of the lcd, a laptop can handle alot of abuse due to its compact and robust nature (at least when it's off).

If the laptop starts, has no dead pixels or discoloration, it's ok to buy.

At least concerning the crack near the PCMCIA slot that is a very common problem with the X3x models. My X32 cracked their twice and was never crushed in any way. Nothing else was ever wrong with that laptop.

asiafish. Thanks for your advise as well.

Any thoughts about removing the palmrest? Keyboards and wifi is no problem but this is not a Customer Replaceble Unit. It seems fairly straightforward but perhaps not even necessary. The X31 is on eBay. Of course all depends on the final price, it could be worth the risk.

I already have a new keyboard and battery intended for another X31 that was stolen during shipping.

I had mine replaced by IBM both times under warranty. Ask for the serial number, there is a good chance that the X31 is still covered by IBM, most of them had 3-year-warranties.
