X2x series swappable parts?

#1 Post by Saysana13B » Wed Aug 23, 2006 5:28 pm

I'm looking at the X2x series (actually, X20-22) and I was just wondering if some of the parts from any of the X2x is swappable with any other X2x. You know what I mean? Like CPU and Graphics Card... most likely its intergrated? I'm not familiar with the X series.

You are right about the CPU and GPU not being upgradeable. I know that the X21 and X24 can use the same battery. Obviously, hard drives should be exchangeable. As for RAM, X20 and X21 can share, and X22, X23 and X24 can also share. But not between these two groups. The first group uses PC100, and the second uses PC133. Also, the max memory for the second group is 640Mb, whereas the first group will max out at 384Mb.

What if you changed the mobo? Or is it just better to buy the next X2x up?

Changing the motherboard wouldn't be that simple. For example, only X22 and up have an infrared port (and thus, the case is different too).

I would honestly go with an X24 directly, since the price differential right now between an X21 and an X24 is not that big (maybe around $150.00). The X24 is an excellent performer. I should know, since I am writing now from one, the same one that carried me through the last quarters of my CS major. :D

The motherboards for the X20/1 and X22/3/4 are not interchangable. The screwholes for the X20/1 motherboards only line up with X20/1 cases, and same for X22/3/4. Keyboards are also not interchangable for the same reason, unless you want to break off the metal legs on the keyboard.

RAM, as mentioned, is not interchangable either (because they use different speeds).

CPU and graphics is not interchangable as the chips are nonremovable.

Ethernet on the X22/3/4 is not interchangable with the X20/1 because it uses a daughterboard instead of a mini-pci card. Modem and wireless is interchangable because it is mini-pci, but the X20/1 does not have antennas, so you will have to install them (which will require some work).

Hard drives, docking stations, and batteries are interchangable.

LCD pannel, LCD lid, and inverter, are not interchangable. The LCD lid hings are orientated differently on the X22/3/4.

Does this mean the LCDs that people sell on ebay that claim can fit any of the X2x series are wrong?
