White splotches on screen (medium pic included)

#1 Post by cjastram » Tue Aug 29, 2006 3:53 pm

Hi,

I have an X30 that experienced a fatal partial immersion (system board failure). I just finished replacing the system board, and now the screen has something strange going on. There were pressure marks on the screen from prior abuse (backpacking is hard on a laptop), but this is much different.

There are large patterns of fuzzy, bright white splotches all over the screen. They appear to be originating in the backlight, since they seem to be "behind" the actual LCD. They are extremely annoying!

Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Should I replace the screen? Inverter? Try to replace the backlight?

That looks like an extreme case of pressure spots. The only way to fix this unfortunately is to replace the LCD, since the spots are the result of damage in the background diffusor foil (the part of the LCD that is responsible for diffusing the light evenly behind the screen).

Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent source for replacement screens?

When you say partial immersion .. what part of the unit was immersed? That damage looks to me like particulate behind the panel itself, like small bits of dirt or sand even.

Either way, she's dead Jim.

The laptop was placed CPU-down in my backpack, which was on its side, so it was really hinge-down. An unopened bottle of water had a loose cap, and it slowly emptied into my backpack.

The laptop was suspended (not hibernated), and was sitting in about 1/4 - 1/2 inch of water. I let it dry for two days, and when I turned it on, great billowing smoke issued from the CPU fan. Upon removal of the motherboard, I discovered that the only damage seems to concern a small, 3-prong chip in the far corner; everything else seems to be fine.

I replaced the motherboard, but now the screen is funky, as you can see.

The screen was damaged from before; it had key-shaped imprints in the face of screen from being squeezed in my pack, and some dim pressure marks. I was hoping it was a quick fix, but since the consensus is that it's the screen itself, it's off to eBay I go.
