need help about adapters...

#1 Post by dorin » Tue Sep 05, 2006 5:38 pm

ok, so i needed an extra charger so i got one with 2 prongs for my x40, whilst it came with a 3 prongs one (europe).

now on lenovo's website
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-59170

it is saying that my x40 (2386-H6G) has to have the 3 prongs one!

now the question is: why?! or its mkt thing, that one is sold in us and the other one in europe? will a 2 prongs (so no grounding) affect my lappy? do the models from europe depends on the 3rd prong, on the grounding?

thanks alot,

dorin

Get your 2 prong adapter and be happy.

i'm not talking about the cable, that's no pb, i talk about the fact that the original adapter has 3 "holes" in it, where i plug the cable, and the new one (bought it from states) has only 2.

so the question is regarding electric matters not how to plug in the outlet a 2/3 prongs cable... :)

thanks,

If the brick itself has three holes (three prongs really), then do not plug or attempt to plug in a two-wire cord. That defeats safety interlocks. The last time I saw such a setup in North America was about 8 years ago on a TP 2611-410.

The bricks I see now are universal two wire adapters that work anywhere I have been in North America, the UK and Europe on 120 and 240 volt systems. ... JD Hurst

of course i wont try to use wrong cables.

i was just wondering if it is a electric matter or a marketing one.

i think a marketing one.

have a nice day, and thanks for your replies,

The powerbrick on my X31 also has three holes on it , I dont know why and it bothers me much since I will have too have an special cord for it all time and not those nice tvo plug cords that fit into most electronics.

in "old" times (back to few years ago) the power was very fluctuating and so (as far as i know) they made the 3rd prong which is for grounding (basically the machines which need lots of power are conected to the grounding for any power loss/extra/fluctuation) to go in earth and not shake the user.

my first computer had that, i even had an laptop which due to lack of grounding was abit electrocuting when touched on the bottom.

but i knwo that lately the adapters evolved into (ie the 110-240 v) and that risk is way limited.

that's why i was wondering if the us models (using the 2 prongs adaptors) -i mean laptops- have something to protect against fluctuations or the current adaptors removed that danger?!?
