Wrong power supply used for X31, now won't run off AC mains

#1 Post by JonathanW » Tue Sep 12, 2006 2:12 am

A friend (no, really!) has managed to damage his X31 by plugging in the wrong AC power adapter - I won't bore you with how/why he did it but suffice to say the machine no longer boots/runs when the (correct) AC adapter is plugged in. However it does work absolutely fine on battery.

The power supply he used has an output voltage of 15V and a VA of 30. This seems low to me - he told me on plugging it in the first time, there was an electrical crackling and the X31 appeared to die. He unplugged it and then restarted ok on battery.

Am I right in presuming a component(s) is blown on the motherboard and the only real solution is to try and find a replacement? Or is there by chance some built-in protection for this happening that requires a simpler/cheaper solution?!

Any advice gratefully received, especially from my friend who is currently losing sleep over it!

I think you'll find the DC input circuit is fuse protected. Hence the repair is as simple as replacing the fuse:-)

the problem is, to find it, and to find a new one.

the HMM for the X31 should help with the former; as for the latter, well...we did a similar fix in New Zealand using fuse wire from the electronics store

nightmares should turn to sweet dreams
