X30 Formatting Error - Bios Problem? (media test failure...)

#1 Post by gregface86 » Sat Sep 23, 2006 3:33 am

I try and format my x30 using the external CD drive but it comes up with the error

media test failure, check cable

then it just loads into windows anyway.

The BIOS is setup so it boots removable devices, then CDROM then HDD. The error message comes up whether or not the CDROM is plugged in, and the CDROM drive works fine in windows when the laptop boots.

Below is my BIOS settngs, I think I need to update them somehow, but when I read support it seems to suggest that they are not compatible with each other.

BIOS VERSION = 1.03 (1KET42WW)
EMBEDDED CONTROLLER VERSION = 1.02

The laptop was bought second hand, so im not sure of what im doing with it 100%.

Since the machine is working, go to the Lenovo Support site, locate your exact model, download the newest Embedded Controller and BIOS for Windows Install (not diskette, in your case). Run the Embedded Controller update, then as soon as the machine restarts run the BIOS update. Then see if the machine boots from CD. ... JD Hurst

Okay I have now successfully updated the BIOS and Embedded Controller, however the problem still persists.

I just can't get the machine to boot off the CD, even tried resetting BIOS.

The "media test failure, check cable" error I can get rid of by plugging in my ethernet cable.

however the system still refuses to boot from the CD, It displays my MAC address then a GUID number

then it pauses for about 40 seconds before displaying another error, then it just loads windows. Ocasionally it just loads windows anyway.

I need to know exactly how to get it to boot from a CD thanks.
