Just bought an X23!

#1 Post by Spaghetti » Sun Sep 24, 2006 3:53 pm

Well I haven't received it yet, but the beast in question is a Thinkpad X23 type 2662-EBG with modem and ethernet. It has a 12Gb hard drive which I'm going to replace with a 40Gb jobbie that I've got lying around, and I've already bought a media slice dock for the DVD drive that I have. I wanted to ask about the wifi/bluetooth potential before I start splashing out more cash. I'm hoping to get a wireless mini-pci card from wireless4laptop, but I'm a bit unsure about the bluetooth. I know the BC01 definitely fits, but can I use the BMDC200? Ideally I would like to have bluetooth, wifi, AND keep the 10/100 LAN. I've read somewhere on this board that it's possible on the X22, but is it possible on mine? What do I need to achieve all three?
I've also seen an intel (and other) wireless mini-pci card on ebay - they say they're guaranteed to work, but can I trust this?

Regards,
Ed

Good luck on that. I asked that question several months ago and got no answer. From my research it seemed not possible to have bluetooth and wireless at the same time. There seemed to be wifi/56k mini pci and a bluetooth/56k modules...but I didn't see a wifi/bluetooth module. If your interested, I have a bluetooth usb dongle for $15 + ship. I also have an atheros ab wifi mini pci card for ths same price. Hope you are successful, and I even hope that I am wrong! :)

From the hardware maintenace manual http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4UZMN7 (pg 69-72) for the x series, it looks like there is a mini pic slot for wifi and also a CDC slot for bluetooth. I just purchased an x24 and it should be arriving this week. I plan to use my wifi card and BT card from my broken T30 in the x24.

I will let you know how it goes.

EDIT: I was always under the impression that ethernet was onboard, however, this site http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X24 says that the ethernet is a daughter card. Hmm, i'll have to see what mine has!

Yeah, spymac, it just seemed to me that you had to lose functionality to gain the functionality.

Part of that issue might be the antennas - bluetooth and wifi use the same uf.l antennas, so hooking up the antenna leads to one means you can't use them for the other.

I've tried BDC01 on my x24 2660 MQU and it didn't work. There is no new device found in the device manager. Somehow I feel it should work if I can just find the correct switch onboard to turn on. HOwever I also think it's not possible for IBM to make two versions of motherboard for the same model(the BDC01 compatable and the BDC01 disabled). Anyway, my current configuartion for my x24 is wifi+modem on the minipci slot and the ethernet(Intel Pro100) on the CDC slot and they work fine.

Due to there are plenty of space between keyboard and the motherboard, I think it is possible to hookup a 4-port USB hub and a bluetooth card onto x24 by using one of the two USB ports(just like what I did on my 240x a year ago). I can place three antenna between the battery block and the palmrest, two for wifi and one for bluetooth so it shouldn't be a problem.
