Memory Upgrade for X41T

#1 Post by faberryman » Fri Oct 06, 2006 6:10 pm

I want to upgrade the memory in my X41T from 512MB to 1.5GB. Specifications call for DDR2-533 PC2 4200 memory. Is there any problem using DDR2-667 PC2 5300. I know using faster memory than called for is not a problem on a desktop, but didn't know whether it would cause a problem with a ThinkPad. Also for the DDR2-533 PC2 4200 memory the CL=4 whereas for the DDR2-667 PC2 5300 memory the CL=5. Could using faster memory result in slower performance (theoretically) than the slower memory with a lower CL?

It should be alright to use PC2-5300 memory in the X41T, PC2-5300 is back compatible with PC2-4200. plus I am using one rightnow :)
But I have heard some compatibility issues with some brands, so you'd better stick with those modules certified by Lenovo.
I can't answer the question about CL though, no expert in memory or overclocking.

Any news regarding faberryman's original post? I'm also looking to bump up my x41t to 1.5gigs. I'm looking at crucial's website, and see the 2 options at PC2-4200, and PC2-5300.

I'm not a memory expert, so was hoping someone could shed some real life expertise here. Since the price difference is about $10.00, I'd happily spring for the PC2-5300 if it would make the tablet snappier.

It definitely won't make it faster. The only advantage of getting the PC2-5300 is you might be able to use it on other machines in the future.

faberryman, if you aren't sure what to get, go to crucial.com or 18004memory.com and buy modules that are guaranteed to work on your computer.

I just bought 1GB of Samsung PC-4200 DDR2 533Mz RAM and when I put it in (I tried several times) the computer appears to turn on but it won't boot. I'm not exactly sure what the model number is, but there is a picture here (it's tricky to read and google didn't like an of my guesses) http://www.emartbuy.com/us/console/imag ... 83_ico.jpg . It's supposedly CL5. The IBM site said the laptop takes PC-4200 DDR2 533Mz CL4. I'm not sure whether or not this matters. The stick that is currently in the available slot is 512 MB of PC-5300 DDR2 667Mhz CL5. I would think that since the current stick is CL5 that this other CL5 should work, but I don't know anything about RAM.
