Hi,

Not sure about the Atheros card, but the Intel card should work if it's a generic. If it's branded with an IBM FRU it won't be able to start unless it's a card model that actually shiped with the X23 or X30 (probably not the case since the 2915 was released long after the X series laptops).

One other caveat; I'm not sure if this is a problem on X Series the way it shows up on the Ts, but if your system fails to boot and you get a messaage saying: "1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in -Power off and remove the miniPCI network card"

..you'll need to do a search on "no- 1802" and run the patch.

This link should lead you to the information that you'll need:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20365

The easiest way to do this is to burn the .iso file to a CD, and then run it as per the instructions. Remove the card first, and when it asks you faor a device type, enter "Intel Ethernet Device" (assuming it's the Intel 2915).

The X series are great little machines. So good in fact, I sold my shiny new Z61m because the cheap secondhand X31 I bought did everything I wanted in a laptop. :D

I recently installed a Broadcom 802.11b/g card into my X31. (I was replacing a Cisco 802.11b only card.)

As this machine already had wireless from the factory, the antenna was already installed. If you don't have two little wires labeled "MAIN" and "AUX" underneath the keyboard, you'll need to install a wireless antenna -- be it a proper IBM part (which fits into the screen; better reception but a fair bit of disassembly required), or a 3rd party antenna which I believe get stuck onto the underside of the keyboard.

Anyway, installing a MiniPCI card is no more difficult than installing memory, in terms of the slot and how it's fastened, it's the same.

However when booting up with the card, I did get the 1802 error Clown God is talking about. The no-1802 patch to fix this is fairly simple; I downloaded the CD version. Just boot off the CD, and type "no-1802" when it has finished booting, and you're off.

Without the patch, I got the 1802 error on both the Broadcom card, and an Intel 2200BG card that I took out of my old Compaq laptop. With the no-1802 patch set, both cards booted without any fuss. In fact -- with the Intel card installed -- it detected the card and showed a Centrino logo on the boot screen, rather than the Pentium-M one :)

Given that workaround patches are something best avoided if possible, I'd install the card and check to see if your system properly boots before working out whether you need to apply it or not. (You will need to remove the card before applying the patch, then put it back in once it's done.)

I got the link to the no-1802 CD image, and other general information about the issue, from here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... twork_card

I put a 2915 in my X30. Installed card, ran the CD patch and installed the drivers I found at Intel.com. No problems, works perfect.

Many other laptops use Broadcom wireless cards. e.g. Dell, HP, even Lenovo. I think any Broadcom 943xx card can use the same driver so you might have some luck there. Some of them are manufacturer locked. e.g. I tried using a Dell driver on my card and it would refuse to install, despite being the right one.

Here is a driver link that the people I bought the card from eBay gave me: link But I've been having issues with power save modes with this one. Not sure if it's to do with the driver, or it not playing nice with whatever makes Fn-F5 work.

Currently trying out a driver from Lenovo: driver

Also the latest Broadcom driver which is most likely to work: link

I'm fairly sure the CF card slot can support I/O devices.. but I've never tried.

Not the internal ones, I think your best/only option would be a USB PCMCIA card.
