X40 High-Pitched Noise Problem - Not the Fan

#1 Post by x40owner » Wed Nov 08, 2006 12:36 pm

There is a high-pitched, almost Morse code-like noise that comes from underneath the trackpad on my IBM. It almost sounds like I can hear the 1s and 0s, as crazy as that seems. The noise is more prominent when the machine is running off battery power.

I've Googled this problem, and I've found people who have suggested ACPI fixes for Linux. However, I'm using Windows.

Has anyone else experienced this noise, and what did you do to correct it?

You think it's worth sending in, then?

i know it sounds funny but use your ear as a stretoscop and try to locate the sound. if indeed is from the area where the hdd is, call ibm, they'll send you the new hdd home (at least ibm swiss did it).

if the noise is driving you insane (mine did) send it in, but try to locate the area where the sound is comin from

I used my ear to pinpoint the sound, and it's coming from underneath the trackpad.

have to say, i've heard it a few times on my X40, but haven't heard it in quite some time. Never traced it as it was faint and very short-lived.

AARRGGHH! Those are fixes in Linux, and as such, they are unhelpful. Has no other X40/Windows user experienced this problem? It's a high-pitched noise that's noticeable when the X40 is running off of battery power. It seems to be related to the screen refresh?

Greetings,

I have the same problem with my T41 and I think it might be my power supply. I called IBM and they are sending me a new power supply to see if it fixes it. Have a look at ....

Ugh, my X40 has the same problem, and it doesnt matter if you have it powered via battery or adaptor. It was so annoying to me that I made IBM replace my motherboard. No help!

I guess this is an issue with most laptops, since my friend's dell does exactly the same thing.
