Thinkpad X20 Embedded Controller and Keyboard Problems.

#1 Post by Terrahawk » Fri Nov 24, 2006 5:18 am

I got my non-working X20 (2662-11M) and it appears to go, but several keys on the keyboard don't work. The Fn key, the space bar and the left, right and down arrows don't work at all.

The seller of the machine advertised it as being "not working" due to a failed BIOS flash. Since I managed to make the machine boot, I had a look in the BIOS (and in Windows) to determine the actual damage. It appears that it was the Embedded Controller firmware that failed to take and it reported as having no version number.

I downloaded a version of the embedded controller firmware and attempted to flash it via a floppy drive (the X20 fits on to my Advanced Port Replicator II). The flash operation started but appeared to finish prematurely. About 60 kB of data was written and then the machine turned off.

Is this what is supposed to happen?

I ended up putting in version 1.29 of the embedded controller firmware and version 2.19 of the BIOS. I may update these later on but what I'm concerned about is what appears to be an incomplete flash of the embedded controller, and whether that could possibly affect the keyboard in the manner I described at the beginning (I can't adjust LCD brightness at all, even via creating a new profile in the Battery Manager Wizard).

Anyone, any ideas?
Geoff.
