Help on which X31 to sell
Help on which X31 to sell
I now have 2 X31's. My wife decided she preferred the T23 over the X31 I bought her to replace her X30 that has a dead screen. So now I have too many X31's! (And a faulty X30 if anyone wants it). I love these little machines but need to sell one. They both have warranty until Jan 07. There are some differences however that I can't figure out. Here are the original specs from the Lenovo site:
2672-2BU: P M 1.4GHz, 256MB, 20GB 4200rpm HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, Modem(CDC), Intel PRO 802.11b wireless(MPCI), 10/100 Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip(TCPA), 6 cell battery, WinXP Pro Warranty 2007-01-09. I Upgraded RAM to 2 x 512MB PC2700 and drive to 60GB 7200RPM
2673-CXU: P M 1.4GHz, 512MB, 40GB ??00rpm HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), Cisco 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Secure Chip(TCPA), Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro Warranty 2007-01-08 RAM is 2 x 256MB PC2100
I can move hard drive to the CXU, is the PC2700 ram also going to work in it?
Any significant difference between the Intel and Cisco wireless? They both appear to be "b" cards. Also I am assuming both have 10/100 Mps Lan on board (they both show 100Mps when connected).
Does anyone know difference between 2672 and 2673? I have looked at two different versions of the TA book but can't find the X31 2673.
The one reason I like the CXU is that it has a new screen which is a bit brighter than the the other one. If all I have to do is move the hard drive and the ram, I would prefer to keep the CXU and sell the 2BU.
Any advice or information would be welcome. Thanks!

Hi, Michael.
I am not trying to brag about the machine from me. But the new LCD really matters. It is hard to just request a new LCD through warranty. I actually love the LCD very much. It is very bright.
You can just swap all the memories and hard drive to the CXU. It should work without re-installation.
That said, X31 is way better than T23. Maybe you can keep the X31 for your wife. I especially love the keyboard.
AS far as wireless card is concerned, I have had really good experience with the Cisco card. It is very stable. Cannot speak of the intel 802.11b version though.
I might be interested in your X30 though. The reason is that I have never owned one and I really would like to try it. I have an X24 screen. I think it might fit. PM me how much you want.

currently own X61S, T42, X31, Macbook Pro Unibody i5
Thanks for the feedback. I am curious why the one X31 calls for PC2700 ram, and the other for PC2100.bigtiger wrote:Hi, Michael.

They are both supposed to use PC2100. When you install PC2700 modules, they reduce their speed and act like PC2100 sticks.mpcook wrote:I am curious why the one X31 calls for PC2700 ram, and the other for PC2100.

The Crucial memory selector says 2700 and the original ram from IBM was also 2700, probably why I ordered my upgrades at 2700 as well.
You are correct - I remember at the time I upgraded there was discussion on here about this issue. I just went back and looked at some of the posts, and apparently IBM put PC2700 in X31's at some point because it was cheaper than PC2100.

I am looking at the tawbook, which shows that some X31 came with PC2700 (333MHz), but "memory controller limits speed to 266MHz". If PC2700 is about the same price as PC2100, I would prefer PC2700 because it would work on more recent models, e.g. the X40.mpcook wrote:I just went back and looked at some of the posts, and apparently IBM put PC2700 in X31's at some point because it was cheaper than PC2100.

Regarding your x31 screen. I recently had my x31 (2672-BBU) sent in for a couple of issues. I had to go through a couple rounds of support calls, but eventually got my LCD replaced (unfortunately they also swapped my Thai keyboard for a mushy one... oh well). I don't know how many nits it went up, but the replaced screen was much brighter, and seems a bit sharper.
I'm adding this info to your thread, just to let you know that it's not a lost cause to have support give you a LCD replacement. Just have a solid reason for doing so. In my case, there was a splotch of pressure marks on my LCD, only noticeable on a black screen. If memory serves me correct, I think others have been successful arguing about light leaking out of the sides... not sure if they got a LCD or bezel replacement though.
