X21 problems - possible mainboard issue (IRQs + stop errors)

#1 Post by sfaoldun » Mon Nov 27, 2006 8:10 am

Hey all, it's me again - I last posted asking for help with ACPI on my Thinkpad X21 (2662-65U). Well, it seems to have developed another problem, and that is described thusly:

1. Machine will not boot under Linux (hangs on assigning IRQs, churns out a 'Misaligned Resource Pointer' for IRQ11 error and hangs.
2. Machine boots and works under Windows until it has to assign something to IRQ11, at which point it gives a stop error (0x000000A - KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR) and does a full memory dump (at my behest), then restarts.

I'm not entirely sure right now whether this is a mainboard failure (OhGodIhopenot) because IRQs & ACPI is both on the northbridge, apparently, or whether it's bad memory - will memtest it when I get home - or whether it's overheating, or ... any help would be most appreciated, and I can post more information if it is required.

Many thanks, all.

EDIT: Or maybe the BIOS has gone a little weird? Possibly flashing the BIOS might help?

Your current bios version?
Yes I would suggest update your bios and do the memory test to start with.
In bios setup, maybe you can try to re-assign the IRQ to avoid using IRQ 11? Though I don't really think it will do much help if ACPI takes over the hardware resource distribution after boot.
Under boot prompt on linux(which kernel are you using?) shutoff pcmcia, acpi, and any possible hardware detection to see if it can boot up. See if you can find out exactly which device is causing the IRQ problem. The KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR can be anything that causes the pagefile dump failure but my guess is if your system couldn't find the correct hardware resource to access the hard drive(IDE-ATA normally uses IRQ14,15) then it has nowhere to dump the kernel image to. Again, not being able to find the IRQ for IDE could be caused by anything(memory, etc).
I would remove the memory first and see if there is any 'good' changes after bootup first.

Okay, I flashed the BIOS and the EC program, and I'm still getting (much rarer) ACPIEC warnings in Windows' System Log.

Also, to note, I found an error hidden way back in the log (from 3-4 days ago) that was 0x0000007E, as well as the couple of 0x0000007A errors I found and mentioned before. Is this looking more likely to be a mainboard issue now? Or could it still be a dodgy RAM module? (Haven't got Memtest86+ to boot from USB key yet)

If you happen to have floppy drive for your thinkpad it would be easier to do the memory test by creating a bootable floppy disk. If you don't have a floppy drive but have a CD-rom, you can check out this Ultimate boot CD link. I personally think it's pretty useful for hardware diagnose.

Many thanks for the reply! I've managed to nab a USB floppy drive from work today, so I'm going to try and boot memtest86+ from there and see what happens. I'll reply as soon as I know the results.

As a sidenote, Windows' logging utility is spitting out errors from ACPIEC (The Embedded Controller did not respond in the allotted time).

Yeah, the memory has come back clean. Is it possible that part of the mainboard has fried? (Though none of the tools on the UBCD reported anything.)
