X24 - Clicking noises from the hard drive

#1 Post by astat101 » Mon Dec 04, 2006 4:24 am

Hi all,

My first X24 had a noisy hard drive and it eventually crashed completely. No problem apart from the inconvienience.

Now I bought my 2nd X24 (on ebay) and I have the same anoying clicking noises that coincide with activity.

Is this symptomatic of eventual HD failure? Is it normal? Is there anything I can do? Am I the only one with a noisy X24?

All tips welcome!

Andy

All laptop HD clicking noises (from my experience) have resulted in HD failures... They don't happen straight away (380XD laptop clicking started and 4 years later of daily use, it eventually kicked the bucket). The HD that shipped with my X22 started click at the beginning of this year, and its starting to see signs of failure... Programs "choke" while it's clicking. So I got a new Samsung 80Gb 5400rpm drive for AU$100 delivered. I use the old clicking 20Gb for a portable external now.
So from my experience... I would just be cautious, and backup regularly...

I recommend SyncBack for backing up. A free little program that does automation.

Clicking isn't a good thing, in general. They certainly didn't leave the factory that way. Back up wanted data and replace the drive when you can.

Don't forget to check warranty status on all drives at manufacturer web-sites. You never know what may be recorded. Some drives have 5 year warranties.
