X30 lid needs new coat of paint but where to source ??

#1 Post by tahir » Wed Dec 13, 2006 12:15 pm

Hello,

This my first post on this forum. Apologies if this has been asked before, I did a search but couldn't find this question anywhere.

I recently bought on Ebay an x30 - it is a fantastic laptop, very light, best keyboard that I have ever touch-typed on, and runs ubuntu linux perfectly. I am an IBM convert !

However, I messed up the lid somewhat by cleaning it with some plastic wipes now the lid black finish is discolored.

Is there any way that I can get the black finish back on with the paint that IBM used? What sort of paint is it?

I tried ringing them here in the UK but the lady said they are no longer made in Scotland and she didn't know what material IBM used for their laptop lids.

If not is there an easy guide about repainting laptop lids - that explains the right kind of paints to use, how to apply etc, etc..

Many thanks,

Tahir

welcome to the forum

forget paint at first:

1. call the maker of "plastic wipes" and request their cleaning
instructions for removal

2. try dishwashsoap and water "sparingly applied" w/ paper towel:
start in the middle, go easy, let dry: if better, do more

3. try 50/50 mix alcohol/water==vodka!=scotch "s.a." w/ p.t. as above:
start in the middle, go easy, let dry: i.b.d.m.

4. (last resort YMMV) paraffin *in*small*quantities* paper towel:
start in the middle, go easy, let dry: ditto

5. take heart: use the machine more, see the problem less.

(snow:x20/debian3.1)
the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

Tom - thanks so much..
I tried firstly kitchen towel and some water and after a few minutes it came off. Now back to normal again.

Akao - sorry it looks as if some special concoction was used on the lids, and I have not been able to find out what it is.. Probably, an IBM trade secret.
