HDD Clicking question, seems to be abnormal

#1 Post by 19266287 » Thu Dec 14, 2006 9:43 am

Dear brothers

I have a X41 2525 CB1, bought October last year 2005. Also, I am a local Chinese raised in Hong Kong.

I did not find out any articles in my region about X4 HDD clicking problem. It was not until I surf over this site and unveil that this question has already been a hot topic in the opposite side of the world.

Description of the problem

From the first time I obtained my X41, I found that its HDD will have a "loud" clicking voice from time to time. I, at first, also found it abnormal. But, later, I started get used to it, luckily am I, the HDD has never crashed down.

BUT, it seems that my HDD clicking problem is different from yours. I first have to say, it is a "lound" voice. I noticed that It also occur when the HDD is reading/writing. When it occurs, the whole computer will stop running for a while (around 0.3second) if running is necessary (e.g. loading a programme).

Can anybody tell me whether it is normal or not? Is it the type of clicking you guys have been talking about? My x41 is still under warranty, but it is hard to demonstrate to the technician of the problem as the clicking occurs not regularly (around 10 - 30 minutes a time).

Please help

19266287,

When you said that your computer freezes up for 0.3 seconds, do you mean that everything locks up? ie. can't move the mouse, etc. Or is it the Hard Drive Active Protection System pausing the disc, and tucking the spindle head away on the hard drive?

If you're not sure what the Hard Drive Active Protection System is, take a look at this link on the Lenovo site: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54259

I would double check your settings for that on the freeze up issue. As for the clicking noise... you should just call IBM Serv and tell them that your hard drive is clicking. I did this about 1 month ago, and the rep immediately sent me out a new hard drive, with Rescue and Recovery discs.

Thanks for your reply.

For freezing, I just meant it cannot load anything from the HDD. But I can still move the mouse or anything that does not require loading from the HDD.

I am sure it is not APS problem. First, the problem happens even if the computer is put on a stable platform. Acutally, I just use my laptop as a movable desktop. I don't move it, except if I were required to do some works outside, but it is less frequent. (Hahaha) Secondly, the APS icon in the system tray does not indicate a suspension. (For APS suspension, there will be a low clicking voice, but I think it is acceptable.). By the way, I always perform updates with Sys Intaller and SystemUpdate 2.

Thanks for your reply. Appreciated.

In Hong Kong, IBM/Lenovo is not that caring customer as they did in US. I learned that you can get your computer changed in US within the first month. Therefore, if I go to Thinkpad Centre, they will just change it with a OLD one.

Acutally, I had an experience 7 years before to change my 380XD HDD at thinkpad centre, they just changed it with a OLD one. Not a new one.

Please help. Brothers.
