System temp. when using X31 with 7k60

#1 Post by gator » Sun Dec 17, 2006 3:22 am

I am a new X31 user (new to using ultrabase too). Does the X31 get hot when you use it in the ultrabase? Normally, my X31 runs at <30C (CPU temp), but when I leave it for a while in the ultrabase, it heats up to 55C and hot air spews out of the vent holes. Is this normal X31 behaviour? Any ideas to keep the system cool when I use in the ultrabase?

Mine gets hot as well when in ultrabase. I don't use it very often.

Definitely gets warmer, I think 50s sounds about right (I do run NHC). But I don't think my fan is on very much, still.

I use the ultrabase as my dock at the office, with my 20" LCD and ultranav keyboard connected to it, so the little bit higher temp is quite acceptable.

I replaced the stock 4200 rpm HDD with a 7k60 in ths X31. Is that causing the problem? Anyone run into similar problems with a 7k60 in an X31?

I ran a 7k60 60gb drive in my X31 until I spilled wine on the screen and had to ebay it  This was before IBM even offered the 7200rpm drives in an X31 or X32. From birth, my replacement machine, an X32, has had a 7200rpm drive in it (ok, not from birth, I swapped it after I received the machine from IBM). I have never had any heat related problems. This dates back to when 7200rpm drives were rare on notebooks, and I remember reading the Hitachi technical notes that indicated that they had done some things with the drive and its firmware to run the drive in a way that it would not generate excess heat.

There are two versions of the 7200rpm 2.5" Hitachi drives; the "E" models are not intended for laptop use, rather they are to be used in Blade Servers. If you by chance bought an "E" drive and put it in a laptop, I'd expect that it might well overheat. You should be able to determine the type of drive you have by going into drive properties in Windoze and seeing the model number of the hard drive in the dialog box.

p.s. no experience with an ultrabase but I'd think usage in an ultrabase would be even better for heat dissipation than inside a closed up laptop.

Well, it is a regular laptop drive, not an E model. On advice from Brent Presley, I installed NHC and set the HDD to quiet and the temperatures are normal now (though sticking it in the ultrabase does make things warmer). If I have one complaint about my X31, it is going to the be screen - resolution is perfect for the size, but the viewing angles are pathetic (more so since I am used to my T60's fantastic screen). Otherwise, I am extremely happy with this laptop. The keyboard is out of this world.

I'm just wondering what program you people are using to monitor the temp on the x31

Thanks

On this same subject, what temperature does the fan usually kick on for you guys? I have an X31 running Ubuntu that regularly hovers around 50-60 degrees C and the fan has yet to come on. It appears that Ubuntu knows the fan is there but I'm sort of worried that it hasn't come on yet.

37C and the fan is running for me, trying to see if the T43p ACPI fle for NHC works with the X31.

As an update, the fan's BIOS control somehow wasn't getting through to Ubuntu, but the variable speed fan control script found on thinkwiki .org http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/ACPI_fan_cont ... ol_scripts seems to work great. Now I'm hovering around 40 with very little noticeable noise, which seems to be a bit more manageable.
