X41 Tablet HDD Upgrade Questions

#1 Post by Kamika007z » Thu Jan 11, 2007 11:59 am

Hello All,

I searched the forum but did not find any direct response to this question: What type of hard drive does the X41 Tablet use? I wish to upgrade it's drive to a 100GB (and faster rpm, if possible), but do not know if it is SATA of IDE?

Please let me know.

Also, are there any known issues with upgrading to a newer drive?

Thank you!

The tablet uses the same drives as the X41 and X40. They are 1.8" ATA/IDE drives, and only those made by Hitachi in the Travelstar C4K60 line which max out at 60GB. All are 4200rpm. I hope that answers your question.

By the way, if you don't mind having part of your hard drive sticking out of the laptop you can use a regular 2.5" laptop drive and get the speed and capacity you desire. It's not practical for travel, but around the house it's OK if you are careful (though a dock with a faster/larger drive is more practical there too).

Oh, so a 7K100 would not ideally work, since it's a 2.5" drive and would stick out?

Thanks

You are correct.

What size drive do you have now? I think I have an almost new 60GB model around here that I could sell you if interested. Send me an e-mail if interested.

If you really want a 100gb badly:

I think it may be the only hard drive you can get but beware, these can be very pricey.

Thank you both for the responses.

My client, who actually owns a X41 has the 60GB drive.

Thanks again. I will look into the "MK1011GAH" drive. :)

How many kinds of 1.8" HDDs are there? I used to have a Toshiba Portege R100 and an IBM X40, and their 1.8" drives looked very different.

The 1.8" stated above WILL NOT WORK, here is a picture:

http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/20 ... mg0504.jpg

The X41's ARE 1.8" BUT they are a different kind of animal and I have only seen them on the ThinkPad line...here is a picture of ours with a TWIST!! The EXTERNAL dimensions (enclosure) will make up the current "standard" 1.8" drive used in iPod's, external "slim" HD's and a ton of other things.... BUT if you look closely at the SILVER AREA, this is OUR HD, that is what our ThinkPad's have, they are not by definition a "standard" 1.8" HDD

http://www.tomshw.it/guides/storage/200 ... 0-pers.jpg

and a pic without the "enclosure":

http://www.xcomputer.cz/ImageWrite.asp?CO=FD604&FL=1

Here is a picture of a "TRUE" 1.8" HDD next to a 2.5" for comparison:

http://images.tomshardware.com/2006/04/ ... drives.jpg

OK....

Here are the dimensions on the X41 1.8" HDD:

54 x 70 x 7.0mm

and a pic of the dimensions of a "STANDARD" 1.8" and 2.5" HDD:

http://dynabook.com/pc/catalog/ss/02102 ... es/hdd.gif

OUR X41's 1.8" HDD are 70mm wide JUST like a standard 2.5" HDD, a standard 1.8" is 54mm Wide...so the X41's HDD is a 1.8" HDD with the CONNECTOR/INTERFACE on the side!! Can anyone say....SOL!!!

Mmm, I know, that [censored] connector is a real pain.

I mean, sure, same connector as the 2.5" hdds, nice. But when IBM does this as the only manufacturer, and no one else follows suit. - It hurts us as consumers.

There are no other [1.8"] hdds out there that uses the standard ATA 100 interface, they all use the "Zero Input Force" ZIF connector.

Someone should design a plastic cap to cover/protect that part of the 2.5" drive I'll have sticking out of the front of my X4x laptop when I can't buy a 1.8" replacement anymore.

Of course it must be black!

A big black zit on my X41t... just like the "zit" these 1.8" drives turned out to be for Lenovo!

Many layers of black electrical tape would do it!

Have someone tried to plug an 2.5" HD in a X41T?

I tried with a Travelstar 7k100 and booted from an usb pendrive.

Every HD software that i tried didnt find anything connected to the IDE port...8(

If you are running XP Tablet edition, you need to have a copy of the Product Recovery Discs or a backup that you can restore to the new hard drive to retain the tablet features of the OS.

A1: Because Windows XP Tablet PC Edition has specific hardware requirements, it can only be obtained pre-installed on a Tablet PC computer. You cannot buy Windows XP Tablet PC Edition separately.

I have tried everything that i know and could not make the X41T recognize a 7k100 HD connected direct to it (replacing the original 1.8" one).

I guess nobody did it before... I didnt find just one case where it have been done.

So my 7k100 is resting on the tablet 8(

Hi there!

Having my X41 tablet running faster by using a 2,5" hdd sounds like a very acceptable solution to me.

I checked the data sheets of the 1,8" C4K60 (p. 28 )

http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib. ... C_spec.pdf

and of the 2,5" T7K100 (p. 36)

http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib. ... _sp1.3.pdf

and compared the signal definitions (pins).

There are two differences: Pin 32 and the power supply. The C4K60 goes with 5 or 3,3 V power supply the T7K100 one only with 5 V.

I assume the X41 tablet uses 3,3 V to save battery.

My Idea is to bypass from the USB-port which provides 5 V and connect from there to Pin 41 and 42 of a T7K100.

For I'm no expert, is anybody out there who can tell me, if this could be working? Or might I kill my tablet by doing that?

Ziborium
