bluetooth headset on X40.. why two taskbar icons?

#1 Post by tokyo_x40 » Fri Jan 12, 2007 2:19 am

Is there a way to fix the "two icon" bluetooth problem? I have two. The fat one (IBM) and the skinny one (MS). Sometimes the fat one is red/blue, showing a error. But even when it's white on blue, my Motorola HS850 headset in seek mode cannot be found.
.. Anyone out there with a working bluetooth headset on their x40?

Yes, I have searched. The most comprehensive thread I've seen is for a t42. The driver is the same, so I thought the fix there would apply. Basically, the fix is to follow steps 1-23 from a Lenovo support site. I tried to follow, but several steps are different. Is it different for the X40?

Differences:
  • Step 17: "Integrated Bluetooth II" not an option. I see IBM Integrated Bluetooth III. Why are II and III seemingly interchangeable?
Step 21: there's 2 that are not signed: "IBM Integrated Bluetooth II Version: 1.4.2.8 (10/14/2003)" "IBM Integrated Bluetooth III Version 1.4.3.4 (1/14/2004)" I either chose 1.4.3.4 or followed the steps to manually designate the install directory. It's not clear what gets installed if you designate the install directory.
NOTE: The driver appears to be different if you use WinXP SP1, or for X41. I have fully updated SP2. (Strangely, Lenovo calls SP2 "XP" and SP1 "Windows XP" at their drivers list) ... I mention that in case the steps are different for x41.

I'm at my wits end. ..and without sleep. Sorry about typos.

Thanks for reading.

should add: under Device Driver, the Microsoft Enumerator is not listed as a bluetooth device. I can hide the MS taskbar icon, but ... could there be a software conflict going on here?

I've problems with this aswell, until I realized that microsoft installed it's own bluetooth driver and not the ibm one.

You should download something called "ibm bluetooth support file" that's about 1mb or similar (don't remember). It only contains drivers for bluetooth.

You then update the drivers for the bluetooth device and specify the driver you want to use. The driver you have downloaded is not WHQL certified (or it wasn't when I did this). So you need to uncheck the box that says "show only compatible drivers" or similar (I run swedish windows, so I don't know what it says in you language.).

There you will select the IBM driver.

There might be some variations to my instructions, but one thing is certain.

If you did it correctly, the microsoft bluetooth icon will disappear and the ibm bluetooth icon will be white text on blue backround.

seneca: You have SP1? Does this Lenovo package look familiar to you?

I run SP2, which uses a different Lenovo package. This package is named "bthwxp1o.exe" ~20mb and it is described as Integrated Bluetooth II and III software for Windows 98 SE/2000/XP I follow all instructions, and still I have 2 icons.

.. do I risk causing damage if I try the SP1 package?

.. For now, I will follow one post's advice (from the T42 link above) and try doing steps 1-23 two times in a row. ..and redownload to satisfy my paranoia.
