faster hard drive for X40?

#1 Post by mbtoloczko » Thu Jan 18, 2007 7:53 pm

My wife recently picked up a new Toshiba W5, and its way faster than my X40. Some of it is due to the faster processor, but some of it is also that slow hard drive in my X40. Its a Hitachi C4K40 40 GB hard drive. I've done enough research to determine that the X40 takes a specialized 1.8" hard drive, and as far as I can tell, the only available replacement drives are other Hitachi C4K drives that are no faster than the one in my X40 now.

Has anyone found a faster hard drive that fits in the X40?

Nope, 4200rpm HDDs are your only option. Have you tried adding RAM?

Ordered 512 MB additional RAM today. :-) I don't have high hopes of it doing much except reduce battery life because my RAM usage is generally only about 390 MB out of the 512 MB on the motherboard.

I had an X40 for about a year. It had 512MB onboard and after adding a 1GB stick I didn't notice any performance gain. However, many others on this forum have reported the contrary.

I maxed out the RAM in all my X4x's and noticed a huge difference, but as others did not I guess it depends on your other settings and uses

- Yak
Lenovo T60 (IPS) - Fujitsu ST5020D - Fujitsu Q2010 - Docks and accessories for each (and a roomfull of stuff I can't use.)

And if possible, don't turn your pc off, just hibernate or standby. That'll keep everything that's already cached, still in memory.

I increased the RAM on an X41 from 512 MB to 1 GB and it made a noticeable difference in performance. With the added RAM I get far less memory swapping, which means less hard drive access. The 4200 rpm hard drive is really the bottleneck on this system so any additional RAM helps.

Thanks. Yeah, I already checked out prices on those. Price is not yet low enough to justify purchase. I am watching and waiting though.

I finally got the RAM bumped up from 512 MB to 1 GB, and it does seem to be helping quite a bit. Doesn't seem to be hurting battery life either. Maybe the increased energy consumption of the additional RAM is being offset by fewer HD accesses.
