Good price for new X41?

#1 Post by rmendoza » Sun Jan 21, 2007 9:01 am

I just saw this X41 at Costco. It seems like a good deal, including the warranty and all. What do you think?

That's a good price. However, for about the same amount of money, and with some patience, you can get a barely used X60 or X60s with >2 years of warranty on eBay. I got my X60s with warranty until May 2009 for $820. Many people don't like the X40 or the X41 because the 4200rpm HDD is very slow.

From the title of the Costco ad when I clicked your link it looked like a very good deal to me as it states "Ultrabase Dock" too. When Lenovo includes an Ultrabase or Dock in a package an optical drive is always included. A top X41 with either base and a cdrw-dvd for $999 is a fine deal brand new. BUT, reading further it mentions nowhere about a Dock or Ultrabase being included, and it specifically states that no optical drive is included, so I feel the ad is misleading. Knowing this, I would stay away and shop elsewhere. My source gets me X41 Tablets similar to this one in specs at Costco (and no sales tax) for less. Look around some more on your own first to see what the market holds. Avoid eBay unless you have a lot of luck and have the time to research the seller and can use a credit card and patience should the seller not represent well. If after that you still have trouble send me an e-mail with your budget and I'll see what I can get the next time one of my sources has somethinbg to offer (or I might sell you one of mine if I can bear to part with one). Unlike some other folks I kinda like my X41 Tablets so parting will yet another be with sorrow :( .

- Yak
Lenovo T60 (IPS) - Fujitsu ST5020D - Fujitsu Q2010 - Docks and accessories for each (and a roomfull of stuff I can't use.)

I did notice that it doesn't come with an optical drive, but thought that's still a pretty good deal. But rmendoza, if Yak can get you a better deal, I highly recommend you to trust him and get it from him. I bought an X40 from Yak in Dec 2005 and could not have been happier about the transaction.

I'd echo the prior comments about the 1.8" 4200rpm drive being a real limitation in this laptop. Not only will the drive be very slow but it cannot readily be upgraded.

In my opinion, a used X31/X32 or a new or used X60 series laptop would be preferred, and by a wide margin.

I concur with previous comments about the limitation of HD in X41. An X41 is not significantly lighter than an X31 either. So I would also go with X31.

As thinkpad warranty comes with machine rather the original owner, So a used thinkpad might be better for personal use. I also got my X60S from as used and I am very satisfied.

On more careful thought, I think all of you are right. I think it might be worth paying the extra bucks for a X60, or wait for a good used one. Thanks for the feedback anyways.

Oh, one of the reasons that I like costco is the additional 6-month no questions asked return policy.

With such a generous return policy, what do you have to lose? Just buy the X41 and see if you like it. I own an X41 and an X60. The X60 is faster thanks to the speedier hard drive and processor but the X41 works just fine. I would recommend that you buy more RAM, however. For me, going from 512 MB to 1 GB RAM on the X41 made a big difference because there is less memory swapping and therefore less hard drive access.

Edit: rmendoza, could you please use tinyurl to shorten the posted URL? This thread is difficult to read because it requires sideways scrolling due to the long URL. Thanks.
