More than 512mb for the x40

Hi,
I just ordered a new X40 with 512 mb of ram, and are planning on placing an order to my online computer store for a new router. Just wondering if I should add another 512mb of ram to my order, for my soon to be mine X40? The freight cost is cheaper if I buy all in once.

Also, anybody got any recommandations for memory? Twinmos or Corsair?

Did you get the one with base 512? Because if 256 is standard on your model, you'll have to take out a 256 chip to put the 512 one in, leaving you with "only" 768.

Also, Corsair is arguably the best RAM out there. I don't know anyone that could say Corsair wasn't in their top 3 manufacturers. Additionally, which "online computer store" are you going to? Just curious, since NewEgg tends to have good prices. And if you aren't sure about a store, check out their reseller ratings http://resellerratings.com

Let me know if I'm wrong but...
Does it matter which brand memory you buy for a notebook? With reliability aside (not sure how much/little ram fails out there), nothing else matters. It's not like you're gonna overclock the memory, even if you wanted to you couldn't. O_o

Since you got the 512 model one, I'd say you're fine. 512 is the amount you'd wanna be at. Just upgrade later if you happen to think it's a bit sluggish.

I thought that the base memory on the X40 was soldered in???

I`m getting the one with 512mb mounted on the mainboard, so there should be room for more. The netshop I am planning on buying from is in Norway, komplett.no, but they have branches in the uk as well. komplett.uk.co.

So you guys think that 512mb is enough for now? Plans of use are internet, mail, word, excel, web design, movies, and some basic games.

Also, I noticed that Corsair got two kinds of memory. The Corsair Value series, and the xms series.

For the purposes you listed, 512 is plenty. But an extra 512 costs so little you might want to go for it anyways... I also believe it doesn't make sense to pay premium for a "brand" name memory on a laptop.

Sure, he won't likely overclock, but why put reliability aside? That's why I'd pay more for good RAM. I don't want it crapping out on me.

Not to mention that the X40 is "ticklish" as to what types of RAM it accepts.... I tried buying PNY RAM from CompUSA when I bought my X40 and after two different sticks I have it up. The machine didn't get past POST, only beeped. And I did check PNY's webpage and they promised the RAM should work, but anyway....
So I bought original RAM from IBM which of course worked (and exposed me to IBM's crappy delivery service not to mention their incompetent partner UPS

I meant with reliability aside, which does matter, nothing else does... as in value vs XMS or... Corsair vs. Crucial blah blah... basically, go for the cheapest brand name you can find. Probably Kingston.

Yeah, UPS does suck... don't know why they switched to UPS... I had problem with the delivery guy picking up a package for IBM. They claimed he came up to my home to pick up a package but never did. Not only that, but he also lied on paper by sticking a note the next day on my door claiming he was there the day before...
