(X40) Periodic Beeps
(X40) Periodic Beeps
Hi. I was wondering if any of you other X40 owners are experiencing a similar issue. My machine makes a frequent beeping noise, perhaps as often as once every 20 secs or so. The noise is fairly muted and seems to come from the left side, so I suspect it is related to accessing the hard drive.
I have disabled the Active Protection System and the noise is still occurring, so I have ruled that out. I was wondering if this is part of normal operation? And if there is any way to quiet the machine, as it is getting to be a nuisance? Thanks for the opinions.

Beep as in computer beep? Or clicking sound? If you're hearing clicking and it corresponds with the hard drive light flashing, it's probably the hard drive. That's normal.

I heard it too
The stupid beeping is annoying the hell out of me now. I use the laptop on bed so when i rest my head on my bed, i can hear the beeping noise. I thought it was the WIFI card (mine is a G). Before it was short beeping but when i turn the wireless off, it is just a very long beep, like there was no signal. Is it just my laptop or its the same for all.

I Get the same beep, (not to loud, but you can hear it) but only when my laptop is on the ac and fully charged.
Ah well, it isnt that bad. 10 times beter then my Acer, that laptop had a constant verry high beeping noise form the Bluetooth card.

the obnoxious beeps
I went to the repair place, and the guy told me he thinks the beeps are overheating warnings -- that the air opening on the bottom of the machine is so small and close to the surface, that it doesn't let adequate air get out and overheats the X40. That's why it usually has to be running for a while before the beeps start. If you shut down for a few minutes, then restart, you can buy yourself about another 45 min. give or take before the noise starts again. Also, if you've got the dock, it allows more air to get out, and delays the overheating considerably. I think this is a defect in the whole line, and I think we should get our money back.

I have the same beeps 1-3 times/minute.
It doesn’t mater if the computer is running on batteries or AC.
The temperature is 28º C (in Battery Information) so I don't think it's an overheating problem.
That would be the temperature of the battery then, and not the processor

Four quick beeps with very small period.
It is not a HDD it is not an overheating warning. I have no idea what is it. But guy in service told me "look on it, it is so small, it's hard to get there good parts and have it silent". And I agree. I used to this beeps

(see my other comment on a similar thread.)
Why don't you just turn OFF the option for enabling the computer to turn off the USB Root-Controller when not used?
It is in the device manager.
If you do this, your power management of Windows XP SP2 will skip the controller when checking for options to conserve energy.
I opted to not save a bit of energy but to eliminate the annoying beeps by just turning it off.
One mouse click will make a huge difference...

Hi Zafod, maybe because we need this feature ?beeblebrox wrote:(see my other comment on a similar thread.)

But what is controlled by it ? Isn't it required ?But anyway thank you for solution for this mysterious beeps
windows checks the USB port whether there is any device that is enabled for power save. Most of the time there is nothing connected anyway. Every time it accesses the USB controller it turns its amplifier on and off, drawing current. That's the beep (very silent, very infrequent, VERY annoying!). Well, it did it on my T20, fpr months, driving me crazy. I checked the source, it came from either the IR, USB or HDD. It was the USB controller.
I found it out that the beeps were gone, if I put the mouse into an external USB card and moved the cursor all the time. Beeps were gone. Don't move the cursor, it beeps.

I don't think that it is overheating that is causing it. Although I've never heard this beeping, I do use my laptop a lot when I am in bed, when I go to sleep, I leave it on, right next to my pillow, sitting on my bed (lid closed). I do wonder if enough air is getting in, but my X40 has never caused me a problem with getting too hot in this situation.
The only real audible noises are when the fan kicks in and also the hard disk itself which produces an audible click every every so often, although I have got used to this now.

My X40 parks its heads quite often, when it thinks it doesn't need the hard drive anymore. Problem is, it is often called into duty shortly (i.e., within 30 sec) after, so lots of clunking. Still kind of drives me crazy. Detailed in this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=10722
