X41 performance

#1 Post by kimx » Tue Feb 06, 2007 12:53 pm

Hey

I'm considering buying a X41 to my sister, and I was wondering if it is fast enough to run the software she needs.

She needs to use a program called SAS something which is a program to analyse data ans such. And while she uses this program she needs to be able to access some databases. I think that this is quite heavy on the harddrive but I don't know.

The X41 I'm looking at has the following specs:

Intel Pentium M 1.5 GHz (M758), 512 MB Ram(upgrading ti 1GB), 60 GB Harddrive
Modelnumber 2525-53G

Regards

The X41 is one of the slowest modern laptops due to its 1.8" 4200rpm hard drive, and there aren't faster 1.8" HDDs available. However, according to this document, the SAS software isn't very demanding, so my guess is the X41 would be good enough. But if you don't mind paying a little more, you can get the much faster X60 or X60s.

SAS in its basic form is not demanding, but as it does statistical analysis, it really depends on the size of the data she will be analyzing. If she works with a few hundred datapoints, the X41 will be fine.

If, however, she's working with tens or hundreds of thousands of datapoints, I would really recommend either an X31/X32 or X60 with a 7200 rpm hard disk. X31/X32 is a little heavier, though, and X60 is more expensive, so you need to decide what the appropriate tradeoffs are.

Last time I saw her work with it I think she had a table with 100 rows and 5 columns.

Oh and I should probably mention that she is studying economics :)
So I guess that se would be able to get very large data sets to analyse.

Thanks for the input, we decided to get at X60s.
