X21 shutting down

#1 Post by dwafs » Sun Feb 18, 2007 6:24 am

My thinkpad X21 ( 700 mhz 256 mb ram hd 20 gb ) is shutting down while loading OS or running a DVD . Is this an electrical problem or a mainboard problem ?

Can anyone help please?
Thanks

Does it show the same problem if you boot up in safe mode?

Same problem when booting up in safe mode. Sometimes you can work quite a long time and sometimes the X21 shuts down after a few minutes ( using the dvd unit ).

What happens if you just press F1 at boot and keep it in the BIOS for 10-15 minutes? Is the BIOS usable or does it crash too?

Bios is usable and does not crash .The X21 only crahses when working in windows (xp: fast ;2000 pro: sometimes fast , sometimes after a while)

Open it up clean the heatsink and apply artic silver 5, maybe it's dust accumulated in your machine and it is suffering from overheating.

Do you have any software installed that you can use to monitor the cpu temperature?

Excellent advice that I hadn't thought of! It is possible that the added load of XP is causing the computer to shut down from overheating, so give cmarti's advice a try.

It is not likely that XP is causing your CPU to overheat unless some extra software is involved. XP and 2000 while idle cause the CPU to enter power saving modes. Using perfmon.exe, I can see that this is the case on my X20, which spends most of its time in the ACPI C3 state, which is max power saving and least heat.

You might want to check for extra and unwanted software that is running without your knowledge if you have not already done so.

If you want to watch CPU temperature in Windows, download a piece of software called MobileMeter and run it - it can display CPU frequency, CPU temperature, charge/discharge rate and hard drive temperature.

I would be more inclined to see if you have any bad hardware on the X21, such as RAM.

I have already cleaned the heatsink and applyed artic silver; the problem rests the same.
For the moment only 1 os is installed ( win 2000 pro) and there's no other software on the X21.
During the weekend i will install some software to monitor the t° and i will remove the 128 mb ram module! See what it does.

I may just say , its time for u to renew the heatsink paste(Coolen materials between heatsink and cpu)

I have my X21 with exactly same SPEC with u and exactly problem with u.

When ever the CPU got over 80%usage and the botton become very heat
Then after a "JIP" sound then the X21 got turned down...

After I cleaned the heatsink, replaced the pastes, the problem nvr appears again
Hope this may help u~
