X22 - boot from external CD?

#1 Post by Todd_fromthe_frozen_north » Wed Feb 21, 2007 8:50 pm

Hey all,
I have a former work-X22, I'm rebuilding it for use at home.
For work-policy reasons, I have to wipe it completely before reinstalling XP. My plan is to boot it to DOS, and run 'gdisk' (like 'fdisk' but stronger), but...

I can't make it DOS boot from the external CD/floppy drive (attached via a PC-MCIA card)... even though I've tried all the BIOS boot settings, I can't get it to boot from the CD.

I have confirmed the CD is bootable by booting it in a PC... comes up in DOS just like I would expect.

Any help from the X22 Wizards? I'm stuck.
Thanks for all advice!

I owned two X22's but sold them a while ago so I don't remember what boot options the BIOS offers. But I remember booting successfully from two different USB external CD drives, one IBM and the other Sony. If you can find a USB CD drive, that will definitely solve your problem.

I do not believe there is a standard or BIOS support for booting via PC Card attached devices.

Any USB floppy drive or CD-ROM should do it.

I found the Ultrabase X2 media-slice or whatever they call it, to be a very useful and cheap extra that I picked up from EBay. It had a floppy drive and a DVD-ROM drive, the laptop docks into it.

I have 2 mini-docks that I mostly use, but I keep this widget around for the occasion to reload the OS or whatever.
