Is $500 for X31 Thinkpad with Ultrabase a Good Deal?

#1 Post by shalliday » Thu Feb 22, 2007 1:19 am

I have an opportunity to buy a X31 Thinkpad with docking station and extra battery for $500. Here is what is included:

X31 (2673) Thinkpad
1.4 GHz,
1.5gig RAM, (1 gig of memory recently added)
40 GB Harddrive,
802.11a,
X3 Extra Battery
X3 UltraBase with CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Ultrabay Slim Drive
No Bluetooth,
No Warranty (Expired)
WinXP Pro
MS Office 2003 (Word, Excel, etc.)

I took a look at it today. It seems to be in good condition and everything appears to be in good working order. The display case has some scratches on the outside. The guy told me occasionally the TrackPoint pointing stick gets a little sticky so you have to wiggle it around and then its fine. Would this be expensive or difficult to replace?

Since this guy works at my office, there is no tax or shipping charges so total cost would be $500.

Is this a good deal for this thinkpad?

Thank you for any feedback and sharing your opinion.

Sounds pretty good to me. The battery and ram would be over $200 on their own.

Not bad. Do you know if the hard drive is 4200rpm or 5400rpm?

sound pretty good to me, stocked with upgrades+accessories. Without the 1gb ram, extra battery, the laptop still worth at least 400$, in ebay

really depends if it is the actual keyboard that is the problem, it could be just be the red cap needs cleaning, or somewhere in trackpoint needs cleaning.

I have heard ppl can take the key cap off if so, that might help you clean the trackpoint.

they do sell keyboards for x31 used for 30$, or 35$ for a new one in ebay.

Nice deal. Upside is the RAM and the Ultrabase, on the downside is the 1.4 GHz CPU and the expired warranty. But at $500 it's still well worth the money.

This is a good deal. I got $500 for mine on ebay, similar specs, a month of warranty left, and no ultrabase.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I don't know if the hard drive is 4200rpm or 5400rpm? Is it something I should be concerned about and does it make much of a difference in performance?

I'd say it's a good deal either way. Once you fill up the standard 40 GB drive, you can buy a nice 7200 rpm 100 GB drive and get upgraded storage and performance. :)

Thanks again everyone for your advise and opinions. I went ahead and bought it today.

My wife is very happy since she will be using it mostly. I just found out the T60p I have ordered is being delivered on Monday so now we are both grinning from ear to ear. :D

1.4 ghz is fine as you wil be using speed step most of the time so it will run 600 mhz. I always try to avoid using max cpu since that will just build up heat of the laptop.

don't worry about hard drive right now until you use it for awhile and complain its too slow and such, then you might need to upgrade hd

buy it buy it buy it :)
