where do you get that cd patch from?
You have to boot into dos, command prompt.
anyway, heres a simple enough method that I did:
if you got the cd iso image from
http://www.command-tab.com/2006/02/26/u ... ess-cards/
then all you need is to record that image to a cd. This is done by, example with nero, use burn image.
then use that cd to boot and then on the screen it will say type "no1802" or similar to that. thats it
if it does not say type anything then theres a problem.

No joy guys... I still must not have burned (or extracted) the files right onto the CD because (I know for a fact that I have the CD to boot first) it either boots into windows or I get the operating sys not found...
When I try the card in again, it gives me the 1802 error.

If you look at the CD contents from Windows, what do you see?
I used the bootable DOS CD from here:
http://www.command-tab.com/files/no-1802/no-1802-cd.zip
There is also a DOS floppy version if you have a bootable floppy drive:

Yep, that is the one I tried to use lastnight,
you unzippit it and put everything unzipped onto a CD right?
I did that and then tried to boot from the CD (you can tell that the CD is going first and then nothing happens, it loads right up into windows.

Same here! Installed the IBM 802.11a/g/b 54Mbps Wireless Mini PCI Adapter (73P4301) this past weekend and could'nt be happier. It really makes quite a difference in download speeds from the web.
The actual card installation was extremely simple. Had a little more difficulty applying the patch. I forgot to update the bios to the latest version and I think that caused me some grief. Did not have to manually install drive upgrade. Once I reboted and connected to the web system update automatically downloaded and installed the correct driver for me. Overall pretty straightforward upgrade and well worth the cost and effort! Now considering uprading my other X31 as well.

Ok guys I got the card but the FRU# doesn't match the pice that I got ,sticker say FRU# 39T0081 and on top next to the antenna connectors it say "atheros AR5BMB-44"... the funny thing is that it came in a seal box with all the original documentation and CD (like when you buy streight from manufacturer).

So my question is should I complain to the ebay seller or this is the same card that everybody has but with a different FRU#?
Thanks in advance for any input.
Thanatos.

I have the IBM 802.11a/g/b 54Mbps Wireless Mini PCI Adapter (73P4301) in my X31 as well.
Replaced the original Broadcom card, no 1802 hack, and best of all the card works like a dream.
It does tend to disconnect at low signal strengths, more so with Access Connections than WinXP controlling it. I have not tried the Atheros Client Manager mentioned. Does anybody think that that is an even better solution than letting Windows control? Everything works so well now, I'm lax to futz with anything.

I replaced the Intel based cards that originally came in my X31s with "refurbished" IBM Atheros based a/b/g cards (FRU73P4301) I picked up from IBM/Lenovo in a closeout sale.losmeme wrote:Replaced the original Broadcom card, no 1802 hack, and best of all the card works like a dream.
The resultant increase in overall reception and signal maintenance is the reason I am completely sold on the Atheros based cards and use them solely when possible.
Especially as I am presently chasing (long distance!) the all-too-common problems with dropouts and outright refusal to connect on the Intel based card in my younger daughter's T42.

Does anyone know whether the IBM 802.11a/g/b 54Mbps Wireless Mini PCI Adapter (73P4301) is an Intel or Atheros based card?
