New X41

#1 Post by sachinjauhari » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:03 pm

Dear all,
Needed advice, I've just seen an offer on one of the websites offering a new Thinkpad X41 (Pentium M 1.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD) for £530. Now, I don't really need another laptop but I always have wanted to buy a new X series notebook and the price seemed decent. But as you are aware there are problems with X41's HDD speed. I only wanted to buy it because of the price. Would you guys recommend I go for it?? Please help, this cognitive dissonance is killing me :?
Thanks and best regards

Cognitive dissonance  Man, I had fun with that at uni last year - even though it seemed far removed from my construction management major, it was quite intriguing.

Now, for your wants v needs quandary...I went with an X31 this week with the same mental issues as you had (not that it's a bad thing by any means) - the 2.5" drive size was my main persuading factor, since there was an X40 available for a very similar price and I have a spare 5400rpm drive that will replace the 4200 one that's in the X31 right now. I'm not sure what the exchange rate between the pound and the Aussie dollar is, but I'd imagine £530 would be reasonable for the spec.

Don't have an x41 here, but I have a bit of experience when I bought my x31 that came with only 20gb 4200 rpm. It was ok for common use such as word processing and internet.

If you take care of the hard drive, like defrag once in a while and limits the use of installing every programs you can find or use, you won't see much difference between 4200 and 5400 rpm.

I'm not exactly familiar with the currency and the market laptops in UK but I think 500 english pounds is about 1000 us dollar is the right amount. But sometimes here in ebay are sold a lower price though.

But hey you can always upgrade your X20 which is still a big difference
:)

even having a x31 with a 100gb hard drive I'm still drooling looking at the x41 since it is "new" and unlike mine, 3 years old.

It's awesome, a bit slow...maybe because of the hard-disk but an amazing piece of machine, light (really) and looks lovely. I am so very happy... :D
