X41t and Vista, Active Rotate=Surprise!

#1 Post by renhui » Fri Mar 16, 2007 2:30 pm

I recently installed Vista on my x41t and I gonna say I am quite pleased with the new level of pen-computing experience.
First, handwriting recognition is *way* better than in WINTE 2005. I rarely pen input anything with the old os because of poor recognition rate. Now I can completely pen surf internet in tablet mode, "http://www..com" can be recognized without any problem.
The biggest surprise for x41t users might be the active rotate function. I didn't expect this feature to work when i saw the active rotate setting. I did the calibration just for fun, and you know what, active rotate really worked. Some googling revealed that active rotate actually relies on the same motion sensor used by harddrive active protection, therefore it's just a software thing rather than hardware.
I also played with the readyboost feature to see if I can get any performance gain to make up for the slow HDD. however, since I don't have any high-speed sd cards, the performance gain is far from significant using a ATP sd card with no speed rating. Another centrino-branded one failed the readyboost test even thought it's labelled to be 66X. :) Another finding of mine is that using Ricoh SD/MMC driver instead of the SD host driver provided by Vista can result in a slightly better performance.
