Is X40 appropriate (vs T42) for full-time machine?

I am looking at the X40 and T42. Love the portability of the X40, but this will be my main machine, not just a traveling machine to complement a desk top. I am mostly using MS Office apps. Do many of you use the X40 this way, or would you recommend a T42 for this purpose?

I use mine almost on a daily basis for a full day. I'm an academic, so work at my home office quite a bit. Currently using mine to write a book, write several journal articles, and comment on student theses and assessments. It comes with me to meetings (I'm almost entirely paperless these days) and use it to present at conferences. I also use it to record my lectures (using OneNote).

Main programs I use include Office 2003, OneNote 2003, Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, and SPSS (stats software).

I don't think you'll be disappointed. As a daily-use machine, it's superb. Right now, using it in the kitchen with our wireless network while I cook dinner before the wife gets home. Well, not cook - i'm just boiling potatoes, but it's still effort...

If you're traveling a lot, the 2 -3 Lbs. weight difference adds up quickly. I used an old 7 Lb. P75 TP755cx with a 10.5" screen on the road for about 4 years.

It died on me on a trip in 1999 and I picked up a little Sony 505G P200 dirt cheap at a closeout sale. The Sony weighs under 3 Lbs and has the same 10.5"screen size size as my TP755cx.

I used the Sony to put together a 40 page catalog with graphics and a 50 page price list with Word and Excel. I worked on it both on the road and at home. At home or in the office I used an external mouse, keyboard and monitor.

I replaced the Sony with a T20 at the end of 2000 after I weighed all of the Sony external components that I was carrying around. The Floppy, CDROM, extra battery, mouse, and port replicator weighed a lot more than the T20 with a built in CD and external USB floppy!

If you are just carrying the basic X40 then I'd go with it and use a monitor with an external mouse and keyboard for home use. If you are carrying the X-base (or whatever it's called) with a CD/DVD drive you may want to consider the T42 instead.

I'm currently using a 240x P500 most of the time on the road. I use VCOM's CD Anywhere virtual CD program for the CDs that I need.

I'm currently trying to decide whether I want an X31 or X40 to replace the 240x.
Chas.
