Success! miniPCI WiFi w/X40 & no-1802

#1 Post by danny_w » Thu Mar 29, 2007 8:58 pm

I bought an X40 w/o the miniPCI wifi card, and then bought a card from eBay that I thought would work (correct FRU number). But when I installed it the BIOS froze solid with the 1802 invalid miniPCI problem. After searching on the internet and not finding anything that specifically called out a success story with the X40 and the "no-1802" executable (I did find that the X41 will NOT work), I decided to give it a try. And it worked! Now I have 802.11G wireless on my laptop! So for anybody contemplating this, I can verify that (at least in my case) the fix did indeed work. I downloaded an ISO image of a bootable CD that included the executable, and the whole thing only took a few minutes total.

I just fixed my X30 a week ago.

bought an Atheros card off Ebay that was actually a Toshiba part; I figured if I didn't get it to work, at least I could update another computer w/o problem.

I got the 1802 and the 01C9 error.

Both were fixed, and the X30 now has an Atheros ABG card in it that surpasses my T60WS's intel card. Sad that a system 3.5 years old gets a better signal than a system that's 6 weeks old at best.

That's great. I understand that the 1801 fix doesn't work with the newer machiens such as the T60 and X60. I saw a few posts that said it didn't work with an X41 either. The card that I bought was supposedly for an R50 series.

It's absolutely a great solution....till your onboard battery conks out and your find yourself in a bind and you have to take the mini-PCI card out.

It is the one true flaw to the Thinkpads, and it makes me grind my teeth that there wasn't even a simple option to disable the card and boot the system regardless.

Agreed. There should at least be a way to tell the system to ignore the card and continue booting.

Intel PRO/Wireless 2915 ABG Fru:27K9938 give me error 1802 when I installed it in my X40 (2386-H4G). How is, help the bios hack with this wlan card or die my X40?? Is the bios hack only with Atheros wlan card?

There are 3 approaches to fixing this issue, but only 1 that I would attempt, and that is the "no-1802" executable. It only sets (or clears) a bit in the CMOS that is read by the BIOS; I would certainly not attempt any BIOS change. This approach should work for any card. I downloaded an iso for a bootable cd that included this executable, and worked like a champ. Unfortunately, you have to remove the card first to allow it to boot from the cd (or the F1 suggestion above might work). This is completely reversible by removing the CMOS battery, if for any reason you want to do that.

Thank you! Yes, it works fine. Intel PRO/Wireless 2915 ABG Fru:27K9938 in X40. I used no-1802.com program.

It's very silly that the 2915 abg Intel card works without the hack in the X41, but not in the X40. Hopefully, Lenovo will update the X40's BIOS and EC, whatever needs it. I noticed the lock out when I tried to install one in my X40. (IBM Atheros abg II works just fine in X40.)
