x20 upgrade paths

#1 Post by ender6 » Sun Apr 01, 2007 2:22 am

Hi,

New to the forum. I rescued my x20 from a scrap pile a few years back. It's always been a great machine. Lately, I've been wondering if there's an upgrade path for this machine. I've seen several posts about upgrading motherboards, but none had very definitive answers.

Can I just plop in an x24 motherboard and will it be compatible with my 1024x768 lcd? I'm guessing I've got potential options from x21 to x24. But... which one works?

Any ideas would be great, and thanks in advance.

Did you already max out the RAM and put in a speedy new hard-drive? Those make quite substantial performance improvements, without major transplant surgery.

The max RAM in an X21 is 384MB. cmarti, how did you do that?

No, X24 mobo won't fit physically, but the main problem is the X20 LCD won't work on an X24 board. The X23/24 are cross-compatible though.

The X24 mobo will fit the X23. But like Quattro pointed out, the X24 (or X22,X23) mobo won't fit the X20 or X21.

Your options are pretty limited with the X20. You can put in an X21 motherboard (which will get you 700mhz vs 600mhz and 384mb vs 320mb) BUT you have to watch out on the XGA display. I found that certain older XGA X20s will not work with certain XGA X20s and all XGA X21s. It has to do with the amount of current the X20 motherboard supplies to the inverter. If you use an LCD that requires more current than the X20 motherboard can provider, the LCD backlight won't power up. What colour is the serial label attached to the motherboard under the mini-pci card? It could be pink, white or green. Don't remember offhand which is the colour label that will indicate that your accompanying LCD will work with the X21 motherboard, but I'll go through my junk pile and try to deduce it.

x20 upgrade

#11 Post by ender6 » Sun Apr 01, 2007 11:16 pm

Yes, I've upgrade the RAM to 320MB, and a faster 40GB internal (it's also more quiet than the original drive).

Sorry, took me a while because I haven't disassembled in some time. However, the label under the mini PCI is white P/N 8K3217.

Bummed that I can only go up to x21 though, if even that.

Thanks

Do you mean to say that these two bases will be compatible with the x20 lcd?

Thanks.
