X20 display problem

#1 Post by iansoady » Sun Apr 01, 2007 10:53 am

I've just joined the forum and am very impressed so far so I hope you'll bear with me.....

I have an X20 with XGA display which has been an excellent machine apart from the display flickering, especially when there is a lot of white space on the screen. I replaced the inverter which didn't fix it, and have now replaced the fluorescent tube (which was not easy I can tell you). However, now the display is even worse - it is blank apart from a vertical white stripe about 8mm wide with a red edge towrds the right hand side of the screen. It works fine with an external monitor.

I expect I have destroyed the LCD but would appreciate any helpful suggestions........ Or if anyone has a replacement screen I would be very grateful to hear of it.

I would check the ribbon cables that attach to the LCD first. If they are loose they can cause distortion and lines.

Yep, I agree, the ribbon sounds like the culprit for the distortion. Haven't seen ribbons causing lines down the display though. I've had two Thinkpads come across my workbench with white or green lines doing down the vertical, and replacing the ribbon never cured them.

Many thanks for the prompt replies. However, it's not just distortion - I can't see any display at all.

dmdsoftware: what turned out to be the problem in the end?

Don't believe there is a cure. Tried everything that is replaceable.

Before the CCFL tube was replaced: ribbon cable connector issue.
After the CCFL tube was replaced: if you can not get rid off the vertical line by changing the LCD angle or wiggling it, the edge of the TFT panel glass(where the tiny circuit wiring goes in and out) might be broken.
