Sorry I don't know, but at least they realised the mistake and got it right for the X60

Has anyone tried x4 ultrabase with x41 tablet?

#5 Post by tanstaafl » Tue Sep 11, 2007 7:03 pm

I kind of bought an X4 ultrabase (91P9283) off Ebay before realizing that it wasn't designed for my "new" X41 tablet. (Fortunately it was very cheap.)

It ALMOST fits; the actual docking connector appears identical; there's just some plastic at the front and sides of the ultrabase that keeps the tablet from snapping securely into the connector because the tablet is prevented by this plastic from seating all the way into the ultrabase. The ports on the ultrabase (usb, vga, etc) are identical to the X4 dock (which I also have).

I wonder...has anyone tried cutting away some of the plastic at the front and side of the ultrabase to see if the ultrabase functions with the tablet? I kind of doubt anyone has tried, but I thought I'd ask.

I will probably re-sell the thing on Ebay.

It works!

I'm replying to my own post!

I'm typing this using the X4 ultrabase (P/N 91P9283) connected to the X41 tablet. I removed a bit of plastic from the left of the ultrabase...the bit that was covering the powered USB port on the left of the Thinkpad (the one that's sort of below the tab key). The plastic that I removed was shaped like a triangle and was preventing that side of the tablet from seating in the ultrabase. Took me 5 minutes using a kitchen knife.

I have an external monitor, the AC adapter, and a USB hub connected to the ultrabase, all working fine.

This setup would be no good for traveling...for desktop use only. It is not stable enough. In fact, I wouldn't recommend this setup at all unless you already have an ultrabase lying around. In fact, even if you do have one lying around you might want to sell it on Ebay and use the proceeds to offset the purchase of an X4 dock (P/N 26R8343).

But I had fun seeing if it worked. Back in the day I used to put my own desktops together. No time for that now. What a drag it is getting old.

Now, back to work...
