2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure

#1 Post by phillyd2 » Fri Apr 06, 2007 5:49 pm

Which one do you guys use? I have a X31 and have tried two without success. One was:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817145329

which just made my laptop reboot. The other was a BlueGhost Travelstar http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/ar ... cat_id=611 that I purchased locally but while it did not crash my system XP could not find either of two new HD.

Both will be returned but I need recommendations. I'm leery of the USB power only types since both of the above did not use power cords.

I have a Mapower usb2.0/firewire and have used it with my T23 but hadnt had a chance to use with the X31 yet. I see no reason why it wouldnt work.

Did you format the drive? Did it work in other computers? You might have to go into Computer Management in the Administrative Tools menu.

I use one that I purchased off eBay for around $12.00. The cheap looking ones with USB only power are actually good little enclosures, haven't had a bit of trouble yet. Doesn't even require both USB plugs to operate.

I've a couple of these

and they work perfectly with my X31 without the need of the power cable (80GB Hitachi HD inside).

Some drives require more power than other drives, and therefore, will require supplemental power.

There is basically only a few chipsets in these and they don't require much juice to run. It is the hard drive that requires all the juice to run. It probably depends more on which drive you put in it as to how well it will work.
I'm using an 80 gig 5400 rpm Hitachi in my generic cheapie drive enclosure and it works great. I tried an expensive MacAlly enclosure and couldn't tell the difference except in the price. It is for sale if you want it.
