Check the link and let me know if you can tell if it will work with the x40. I want to make sure it will work without the ac adapter on my x40.

Well according to the datasheet it will only work without the AC adpater when using it through the firewire connection.

But it does not state if that is read or write only or both.
I would assume as with most other external USB drives without the AC adapter it would be read only.

Unless it's one of those USB/PS2 cables that goes into a USB and a PS2 for power.

Could I get a pcmcia firewire card and then use it without an ac adapter?

Depends, most of the pcmcia firewire cards have the small 4 pin ports, which do not carrry power. However, if you get one that protrudes out of the machine, it could have a 6 pin port, which carriers power. However the firewire spec requires something like 8-40v 1.5a output, which may be beyond a pcmcia. The USB ports only carry something like 500ma, which makes it difficult to power a burner, although I have come across at least one which claims to be able to burn off usb power.

There is a nice drive from www.freecom.com with a built in battery. It will run without a power supply using just one USB port.

The drive will not work without the AC adapter on an X40. The X40 uses 4pin Firewire which does not carry power. [Edit: whoops - I was wrong! it WILL work on the USB2.0 ports. Only a few Japanese models have the FW port.]

PCMCIA cards with 6pin Firewire usually have an input for an AC power, since the voltage spec for Firewire is higher than the voltage that can be carried across the PCMCIA interface.

I am familiar with two forms of power sharing cables (or power injectors), one is basically a 6pin to 4pin cable that is split to allow connection of an AC adapter, the other type is also a 6pin to 4pin cable that also plugs into a USB port to draw power.
