X40 and X41 Hard disk speed question

#1 Post by CraigN » Wed May 02, 2007 1:58 am

Guys my first post here i came accross this forum whilst doing some research.

I am a IT support techy and i look after the laptops here were i work. I am currently having major speed issues with the X40 and X41 series thinkpads.

I think i have it traced down to the hard disk and the fact it is so slow.

I have started to buy X60's to replace the X4* series with the Sata hard disk and it being a 2.5" drive instead of a 1.8" drive it is much quicker.

My question is this.

I run Outlook 2003 (cached mode) and a Document management system that integrates with outlook.

Has anyone else got any info on the hard disks in these machines or any experience performance wise in such an environment.

Currently i may have to look at replacing the entire X4* fleet of laptops i have some 80 machines.

It's true that the biggest bottleneck in the X4* is the hdd and there is no solution for it except defrag and more Ram.

It's really been done to death on this forum.

No 1.8" except the original ones will fit due to the different connector, so you're stuck with the 4200rpm ones. And no SSD hdds will fit either.

So you're doing the right thing, going to the X6* series.

EDIT: The X60s (I think) have 1.8" hdds but have the more common ZIF connector and can be replaced with an SSD or a faster or bigger hdd.

X60 and X60s use the more common 2.5" drives. The default drive in most models is a 5400 rpm one, already much faster than the 4200 rpm 1.8" unit in the X40/X41. You can also optionally configure an X60/X60s with a 7200 rpm drive for outstanding performance.

40 GB 1.8" 4200 rpm: 240 Mb/s, 15 ms seek, 2 MB buffer
100 GB 2.5" 5400 rpm: 540 Mb/s, 11 ms seek, 8 MB buffer
100 GB 2.5" 7200 rpm: 630 Mb/s, 10 ms seek, 8 MB buffer
