The C:\DRIVERS directory

#1 Post by selvan777 » Wed Oct 06, 2004 2:11 am

Is it necessary to keep it or it's contents?

Update Connector never worked for me even when the DRIVERS directory was there. I deleted the DRIVERS directory and Update Connector still never worked till the latest release. To my amazement it actually detected, downloaded, and installed two updates.

Has anyone found any need to keep the DRIVERS directory and it's contents? And if so, could you explain why?

Thanks

edit to add some history:

New X20 from IBM with Win98SE pre-installed in early 2001.

The only reason I found to keep the IBMTOOLS and DRIVERS directory was for perhaps the Update Connector (UC) but it, the UC, never ever worked.

When XP Pro was released, I formatted the HD by writing zeros and installed XP Pro along with all applicable IBM drivers (I kept & continue to keep a backup of all recent drivers and the original IBMTOOLS directory in an unplugged external drive) and not once did I never need to restore the IBMTOOLS or DRIVERS directory to C:\.

UC v6.1 has detected a couple updates, downloaded and installed them without the IBMTOOLS and DRIVERS directory but still fails to detect others. That's the case even with the two directories in place.

Since the UC can't be relied on, I update all drivers and what not manually by using this spam-free free service to inform me via email of updates to this, this, and this page at IBM.

Any feedback???
