I bought a used X31

#1 Post by glenn778 » Mon May 07, 2007 11:59 pm

It had a busted palm bezel and needed a hard drive. I bought a new hard drive, a set of restore disks, and a new bezel. I just installed the bezel and notice it also needed a wifi card. So I installed it as I was doing the bezel. I loaded up the hard drive with an image from the restore disks and everything is working like a charm. It also came with a small base which had a dvd rom in it. Looks like every like I made a good purchase so far, cross my fingers ha ha. This is the first X thinkpad I have ever owned. I have a few 600s I have been playing with. I forgot, I also installed a gig of memory. It only came with with 256 megs. What do you think?

Good for you. I have my first ThinkPad (since last year), too. I love it ;)
My TP had 512 ddr when I bought it. I have installed second 512 so i have 1 g, too. But i have to say that i see the diffrent on battery life. On performance too of course ;)

Enjoy thinkpadding...

Welcome to the X-World! The X31 is truly an amazing machine. I have used one as my main computer for 4 months now.

I also really like the "head-turn" factor. Enjoy, you are using one of the best ThinkPads ever made IMO.

Are you saying adding second 512 MB affected battery life and, if so, did it get better or worse?

More memory generally increases the battery life. I am sure this is what the poster meant.

So have I just 3 days ago.

Very impressed with it so far including the very low noise footprint.

My only gripe is the position of the FN & backspace key which are very different from what im used to.

For windows key functionality use CTRL+ESC shortcut. Better than reduced lenght of space bar IMO.

That was due to the history of rivalry between IBM and Microsoft. And mind you, it was not IBM but lenovo who first added the key on X41 and T60 models.

Ctrl+Esc works only to bring the start menu, not for any other Windows key shortcuts.

Unless you need AltGr functionality, or just frequently use the right Alt key, you can assign it to function as the Windows key, using the Keyboard Customizer Utility. Or you can use right Ctrl.

I remapped my right Alt key as a "Windows" key, using the Thinkpad keyboard utility. It works for all the hotkey combos.

How about remapping the CapsLock. This way you get rid of an irritating problem and put that otherwise useless button to good use.
