my first ibm notebook...

#1 Post by cooleye » Wed Oct 06, 2004 11:17 pm

I had my first ibm notebook x40 for 3 days now, I got to say x40 is a nice one for officework like writing paper , checking email, and web surfing.

It is very quiet, somtimes the fan will be up for a while. Most times it is as silent as I expected. The hard drive does have some kind of ticking, but not bother me at all, since my last notebook is sony vaio grx550, in grx550, the hard driver is far more noisy, and this one is really quiet :)

The onlything bothered me at first is the lack of windows key, however I can solve it by software reassigning...the stick point in my view is not as convinient as a touchpad. but I usually use usb mouse. Anyway it is really nice for office work and light to carry.

The pitty is that x40 is only good for office work...no good for entertainment at all. The screen is Ok but not as goos as my old grx550, and it runs slow for multimedia software and games. I think the shared memory of 855gme and the low speed cpu are the reasons behind it. The 1.8 inch harddriver is in fact performing ok, 16M/s in sandra 2004......

Maybe I ask too much for an ultra portable pc.

Overall it is a nice one for me since I mainly use it for typing paper.:)

I usually use windows+e to open explorer, crtl+esc+e is not easy to press at all...I assigned left alt as windows key, and I am happy now:)

I find a nother thing a bit annoying...that is I do not know how to choose a slim dvd combo for x40, the ibm one is too expensive...

No, it will open the start menu, which is different. Ctrl+Esc, *pause*, R will do the same as Win+R though.

Cooleye, in the X40's defense, it's not intended for entertainment, but I used it last night to watch a DVD movie and noticed no problems...Overall, I really like this model.

I used to cuss the TrackPoint, too. In fact, I used to refuse to buy a ThinkPad until the day the T30 came out with a touchpad. Then, I got stuck in coach on a couple of long flights and just didn't have the elbow room to get to the touchpad and had to force myself to use the TrackPoint. Well, I'm a total convert, now - I wouldn't take a laptop without a TrackPoint if you gave it to me! Force yourself to use it for a week or two, you'll see what I mean!

If you need video performance, I'd really stay away from the x40.. can't comment on the x31...

The x40 is amazing for just about everything other than that.

I don't know score information, but I can watch a DVD on my X40 full screen with no problems, if that helps any.

I thought they are more interested in the scores like 3dmark2001, for dvd playback , all today's notebook should be of no problem. Even in a p3 500, a shared vedio card like s3, should have no problem for playing back dvd .
