Bluetooth 2.0 CDC for X31?

#1 Post by Lomax » Wed May 16, 2007 11:05 am

Hello,

I have just got my X31 and am really happy with it (previous machine was a 600X, still in use!) apart from the fact that it's missing Bluetooth. I would like to add this for mobile/pda syncing, dialup modem and A2DP audio streaming.

Despite having spent a lot of time looking at the different CDC cards from IBM/Lenovo I have been unable to ascertain which card I should get. Does anyone know:

a) Which of these cards will/won't work in a Thinkpad X31

b) What Bluteooth revision they are (1.0, 1.1 or 2.0)

Many thanks,

Lomax

P.S. Yes, I know I will need to get an antenna and install that too. No, I do NOT consider a PCMCIA/CompactFlash BT card an option.

FYI, here are the three cards I have been looking at:

IBM Integrated Bluetooth II with 56K Modem (BMDC)
Chipset: Actiontec
IBM FRU PN: 26P8396, 91P7259, 91P7315

IBM Integrated Bluetooth III with 56K Modem (BMDC-2)
Chipset: Conexant
IBM FRU PN: 91P7319, 27R1880 (Actiontec chipset?)

IBM Integrated Bluetooth IV with 56K Modem (BMDC-3)
Chipset: Broadcom
IBM FRU PN: 39T0022, 39T0024, 39T0026

I struggled for weeks to get my internal bluetooth to operate correctly. It worked OK with my Motorola Razr phone, but it would not sync with an iPAQ and the wireless mouse was a total failure.

After giving my ego a little rest, I decided to take the advice of another Thinkpad.com support community member that used an external dongle. I place my order, plugged the dongle into my X30 with MS Windows XP Pro and "presto" it worked perfect. All my problems were solved including working with my Logitech bluetooth mouse. For a whopping $12.95 you get BT 2.0 and shipping is free:

If you can get the internal cards to work...great. If you want to buy my internal card (genuine IBM FRU) I will be happy to receive a PM. I will include the BT antenna. I know that you will probably get yours to work...but if it fails for some reason, do consider the dongle solution. It is smaller than a quarter and about equal to a regular .39 cent postage stamp.

Good luck...Bil

I have now found out that this card:

IBM Integrated Bluetooth IV with 56K Modem (BMDC-3)
Chipset: Broadcom
IBM FRU PN: 39T0022, 39T0024, 39T0026

is Bluetooth 1.2 and supports the A2DP profile I am after. This is what I will try to get.

I think you will find that BMDC-3 is incompatable with the x31 from previous posts on the forum.

 Nooooooooooo! So the only possible way to get "enhanced data rate" Bluetooth in my X31 is to use an external dongle!? Or would it be possible to get a Bluetooth daughter card from another manufacturer that would work?

Thanks,

Lomax

I see the following thread on the subject. You draw your own conclusions.
