Much to my pocket's dismay, yesterday I bought a used T41 tablet off of eBay. This is my first tablet that I am planning on using as my personal portable (in spite of having to carry a work T43p). The tablet capabilities will come in handy using it as a GPS display with a PC card GPS unit and for occasional pure web surfing and such that doesn't require too much use of keyboard.
The unit is still under warranty till September 2008 and comes with 1.5 GB RAM, 8-cell battery and external DVD writer.
Next steps would be to devise some sort of platform/stand for using it in the car - much like cops have in their vehicles. All the commercial solutions that I could find are over $250 and required modifications to the car.
Now for a couple of questions:
Does anyone has experience in making car mounts for tablets or laptops?
Is the performance difference because of the 4200 RPM hard drive really that noticeable in normal operation (no games)?

You could try a laptop cooler as a platform, or get the X4.
Both options require a bit of DIY, but are cheaper than $250.-

I found this site which has an almost DIY product that they are selling. They use 1.5" or 2" pipes to make the arm, a flange as a base and plexiglass tray for the top - all bolted on the vehicle floor to either seat bolts or basically whatever can be found. Looks very do-able though.
