DVD Drive for X3 Ultrabase - Recommendations

#1 Post by lophiomys » Fri May 18, 2007 4:30 pm

Just bought an X31 incl. X3 Ultrabase of eBay/bapman007.
Its a wonderfully cute machine, but it turned out that the
DVD ROM Drive Toshiba SD-C2512
does not read any CD.
Specs say, it should read up to 24x CD.
:?: Does anyone know if there is an easy fix for this?

I figured out that X3 has a Ultrabay 2000 / Ultrabay Plus slot.
:?: What replacement DVD or CD-RW/DVD Combo drive would you recommend from your experiences?

:?: Is it possilbe to stick a non-IBM Slim DVD drive into the X3 Ultrabase?
e.g. a NEC ND-6650?

Thanks for your help.

I've an AOPEN Dvd writer unit,

ISU-8484G

works perfectly. Obviously needs an adapter.
I don't know if it's true or not, but one shop seller (specializing in thinkpads) told me that not all compatible drives would work 100%. He said that some will not permit to boot.

I've never checked if it's true (maybe he simply wanted to push ibm marketed units, since they are more expensive).

uhh, ohh, adapter..., thanks
you are right, of course the std IDE ATA slim connector would not fit.
I just had a look at the connector on my Ultrabay slim drive,
which is again different from the Ultrabay 2000 drive.

I've just seen some adapters for generic units on ebay

the price is acceptable, I think.

Thanks to Mazzinia, your post is very helpful.
I think I got it now.
Investigated the old defectieve DVD drive:
Actually I could remove from the defective DVD ROM drive
the extra plastic parts and adapter on the back side
and mount them on another slimline IDE/ATA DVD drive.
Was a long day today....

You might want to consider a DVD burner for your X31. They also have combo DVD/CD burner drives at a great price.

Good luck...
