Problem Charging X31, AC Adapter Plug Looses Contact

#1 Post by elevated » Mon May 21, 2007 1:29 pm

Hi,

This problem only started to develop about a week ago. The loose connection has gotten worse to the point that I now have to spend several minutes fiddling around with the plug to get it to make contact and charge at all. Once I do that, I can't move the laptop at all or it will stop charging.

I looked inside the AC port on the laptop and the three metal connection points inside seem to be each slightly worn away. Is this possible? My X31 has been used and moved frequently for almost three years now.

Any tips here? This has become a major problem and is getting rapidly worse...

Thanks,

Jake

Jake:

If it's the solder joints on the socket at the motherboard, find someone who knows how to solder and have them reheat the joints. However, most of the time the problem is that the wire from the AC adapter breaks right next to where it enters the plug. If you can borrow another AC adapter, try that first before concluding that it's a motherboard problem. If it is the plug on the AC adapter then you could cut off the last couple of inches of wire and replace the plug with one purchased at Radio Shack. Just be sure to get the polarity correct when you replace the plug! Or, if you're not inclined to solder yourself then you could just get a replacement AC adapter.
