Anything Like A 240X, But New Technology On The Market?

#1 Post by Bill Z » Sat May 26, 2007 3:24 pm

What to do? My 240X went out. It won’t even light the screen with AC adapter. I tried to use the external monitor with no success. The thing is dead.

I really liked the small size for regular office stuff plus I used it to tune up my car (ODB2 stuff).

If it is cheaper to fix this, then I am all about hearing your suggestions as to what I should try first.

If it is a better use of my money to scrap it and get another machine, is there anything like a 240X out there but with 1 GHz CPU or better and a real good 3D video?

I use the things but you guys know the stuff.

Please help.

What's your budget? An X60s with an Ultralight LCD and a slimline battery is even lighter than your 240X (2.7 vs. 3.2 lbs), and the display has a higher resolution (1024x768 vs. 800x600). It's the latest version of the ultraportable line, and it costs around $1,400. If that's too much money, a used X40 can be found on eBay for around $500 - $600 every now and then. It's also lighter than the 240X, and also has 1024x768. I owned three 240's and 240X's and can tell you that both the X60s and the X40 are much faster, and the higher resolution is a huge advantage.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I guess my budget is $400. to $500.

Not to argue because I haven’t held ether of the X60s or the X40s to check the weight. What I liked about the 240X was the extreme small size. It was light for those days but was powerful enough to do my demands and very small.

Because you are suggesting that $500. may get an X40 that it may cost more than $500. to fix this 240X of mine. I figured the power handling part of the motherboard went out (I am guessing here). I guess the parts that work are worth something. Maybe I can sell them and get an X40.

Maybe something will come up.

Perhaps you can just buy another 240X. I bought a nice one for $100 last year and sold it for $130.

I was wanting something with 3D graphics but if I can get a replacement for $100. or so, I guess that would work.

I just checked on -bay and found a 240X just put on but it has a password lock on the bios. The seller doesn't know the password. Will removing the bios battery force the bios back to factery and eliminate the password? If not, then what? Is this worth messing with?

Not to be a devil's advocate, but if you are willing to look beyond Thinkpads you should be able to buy Compaq Armada M300s for around $100 on eBay. They are like the X20 but inside a 240X sized chassis.
Proxima - X31 (2672-C2U)
Pegasus - X31 (2672-CXU)
Taurus - X24 (2662-MQU)
Nova - X41 Tablet (1869-CSU)
