Advice for a single mum wanting going back to uni

First of all Id like to say high to everyone reading. I'm new here and am thankful for such a sight.

I purchased an second hand x41 from Ebay with docking station extra gig and is like new. I was so pleased with the unit until I did a poke around and noticed that others were complaining about the hard disk size. Now call me weak but this has made me a little paranoid about the unit. Others complain about the ticking, of which mine does also. I own a desk top which is a 3.06 mhz and it is faster then this unit to be honest and this also is eating at me a little. I had searched hoping there was a way of making it faster in regards to pages loading and applications also but sadly the h/disk cannot be upgraded. I want the unit to last me a few years and will be needing it for Uni. Of those who have upgraded, can you please tell me was it really worth the extra funds? Also will I miss anything on the x60 unit that this one has, like the little light up the top of the screen thats helps me to see at night. I know this topic has come up before but a little reassurance on what the benifits are would be great.
