X30 Trackpoint Problem!

#1 Post by compnerd4 » Sun Jun 10, 2007 12:34 pm

Hello Everyone,

I was given an X30 (used) and the trackpoint was not working so i bought a brand new keyboard and it still doesn't work. I've tryed everything i can think of. the part that is strange is that is NOT showing up in the device manager... well there is one "unknown device but if i try and force the track point drivers on it it still does not work!

:D
Thanks for any help!!

Try with a live Linux distro like [censored] Small Linux, so you can exclude a software problem ;)

either the linux thing or run the recovery and go back to factory spec preload..

are you sure the kbd/trackpoint cable plug is firmly in place on the system board..?

Start from cold boot, press the black "Thinbkpad" button, it will take you to recovery console.

However, this thing won't work if you have a retail version of Windows installed on your laptop and not a factory preload.

Assuming the factory partition is present on your harddrive:

Press the blue "Access IBM" button during boot. This will launch the Rescue and Recovery console from the IBM factory partition. You will be able to restore the laptop to its original factory state (formats harddrive and reinstalls windows and drivers).

If the factory partition is not present you can use recovery discs. If you don't have them ask for them in the Marketplace Forums and someone may copy and sell them to you.

But try this only after testing a live Linux CD to ensure it is not a hardware related problem.

Check to see if the trackpoint has been disabled on the BIOS.

It sounds like there are component level damage on the motherboard.
You could try and reseat it - that might work.

If not, it's time to look into swapping it out. I believe that X30 boards typically go for around $99 to 129 on eBay.

Look in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for how to disassemble the ThinkPad. I have read some posts in the past (re: other model ThinkPads) where a user has found the TrackPoint ribbon cable connector unplugged from the motherboard. Once the connector was reseated, the TrackPoint began working again.

Hardware Maintenance Manual (July 2005) - ThinkPad X30, X31, X32

EDIT: I just reread your original post. It looks like you already changed the keyboard and TrackPoint. So you have already done the above.

But as my experience of disassmebling X21,
Trackpoint and Keyboard should be sharing the same ribbon cable, right?
