#1 Post by automatic_jack » Sun Jun 10, 2007 4:33 pm

Hi all,

I have to buy a new silent HD fom my dear X30 (my actually HITACHI_DK23BA-20B has some bad sector)...which model you you suggest?

I'm thinking about 7k100 or 5k160

Thanks and sorry for my poor English :)

The 7200 rpm hard drives are not silent.

So, is 5K160 (one platter) a better choice?

Probably. Generally, the less platters the better, so you're looking for the lowest capacity drive in the newest series.

Do you have Samsungs available where you live? They typically have the lowest noise.

If you were thinking about it, I'd recommend against the Seagate 5400.3 - I have one, it's fairly quiet, but not silent, and I wish it was a bit quieter myself.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to get complete silence, the position of the drive inside the laptop does not really help with cancelling the noise. But you should be able to get it pretty [censored] quiet.

Hi,

I recently added a Samsung M80 series (HM160JC) with 160GB to my X30 and it runs like charm. A big difference compared to the old Hitachi 40GB the X30 came with. The Samsung is quite fast so I can barely hear head's noise while reading/writing. The only thing you can hear is the gentle noise of the rotating platters - but it's fairly quite so that I can recommend this hard drive.

Brgds, Torsten.

I would suggest
ultrasilent 40GB hitachi ic25n040ATMR, 4200 rpm, 2 MB cache
or
sligtly audible 80GB, 1 platter Seagate Momentus 5400.3, 8 MB cache

Before you make your final choice, check the manufacturers' spec sheets for the noise levels -- they are sometimes quite surprising.

Personally, I find the 7K100 quite silent enough ...

The Seagate Momentus 5400.3 is a decent drive for it's price, and it should be quieter than the one on your machine now. I have a 120Gb version ready to go into my X30.

But if I had to do it over again, I'd get a Western Digital Scorpio (5400rpm) hard drive. I bought a 120Gb version for my Motion Computing M1400 tablet PC. It is SUPER QUIET, uses as much power as a 4200rpm drive, and runs very cool. It was a bit more expensive than the Seagate Momentus, but only by a couple of dollars... literally!

For my money, it's Western Digital!

Good luck.
Michael
