X41 Rescue and Recovery Fails

#1 Post by capemayal » Mon Jun 11, 2007 5:15 pm

I have a need to restore my X41 to the original factory setup.

I obtained R&R CD's from Lenovo. During the disc #1 Recovery CD, a dialog box opened asking if I wanted to Restart Windows PE. I ignored the box, and continued the process.

I continued with all 6 recovery discs, and during the final restoration procedure, approx 2 minutes into it, the "Failed to restore your computer" error appears.

I tried several times to no avail.

Phone call to Lenovo resulted in replacing the hard drive. Same results.

I installed a retail version of XP Pro, and it installed flawlessly. That tells me that the CD drive and hard drive are okay.

Lenovo sent me another set of CD's, saying that the 1st ones were probably defective.

Tried the new CD's, with the same result.

The Rescue and Recovery CD seems to be version 1.0.0.6. I obtained this by putting the CD in another machine and explored the properties of the .exe file.

The only change I've made to this system, is to add Bluetooth.

I'm at my wits end with this. Lenovo appears to be of absolutely no help. Unit is still under warranty.

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of to check is the setting in the BIOS for the recovery partition. Since the recovery CDs need to re-create the recovery partition then the BIOS probably has to be set to allow access to it.

I forget the exact wording of the three choices, but they are something like:

1. Normal
2. Protected
3. Visible and reclaimable

I think you need choice #1
